Welcome to Reiman Gardens! Volunteer engagement is an essential part of Reiman Gardens’ strategic plan. By engaging volunteers in direct and indirect service activities, we are able to expand the efforts of our programs and reach more people in our community.

Our volunteers participate by:

  • Supporting our entomology and horticulture departments
  • Offering special education programs to adults, school groups and families
  • Assisting with various seasonal community events
  • Providing administrative, clerical, communications, and membership support
  • Serving as committee members and in leadership roles
  • And aiding with many other programs and projects!

Events

Event Volunteers ensure that all Public Events at Reiman Gardens are fun, safe, welcoming, and fully-staffed.

Volunteers are vitally important for most of our public events held at Reiman Gardens. From preparing materials before an event to tearing down/uninstalling decorations after, volunteers help in many ways! Visitors greet visitors, share important information, provide directions, take photos at photo opp locations, play games, pass out candy, provide entertainment, and lot more!

Events which require volunteer help include Rovers at Reiman (April, September), Plant Sale Extravaganza (May), Pollinator Fest (June), Garden Art Fair (July), Pumpkin Carving (October), Spirits in the Gardens (October), and Winter Wonderscape (December). Volunteers can also help with Events Prep opportunities like creating decorations, cutting stencils, tracing/gutting/carving pumpkins, and more!

Interested in volunteering at an upcoming event, but can't find it in Better Impact?

Most event volunteer positions do not require any additional training, as it will be done on-site upon arrival. However, some do require you to complete a short online training before you will see these options appear on Better Impact.

  • Select "I am interested in volunteering at [Event Name]" under Activity (below).
    • Follow the instructions to complete the required trainings, or
    • click on + Sign Up if you have questions before doing the training. We'll be in touch!

Opportunity Descriptions and links to sign up

1. Pumpkin Prep

To help make the life of our Manager of Volunteer Engagement a lot easier, we ask that all volunteers sign up for pumpkin prep opportunities via FareHarbor (linked below).

Pumpkin Tracing:

  • Use pre-cut stencils and permanent markers to trace designs onto pumpkins.
  • October 1-3 (two-hour shifts, starting at 2:00 p.m. and ending at 8:00 p.m.)
  • October 4* (two-hour shifts, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m.)

Pumpkin Carving:

  • Carve the pre-stenciled designs out of each pumpkin.
  • October 8-9 (two-hour shifts, starting at 12:00 p.m. and ending at 8:00 p.m.)
  • October 10* (two-hour shifts, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m.)

Pumpkin Gutting:

  • We can't carve a pumpkin until we've gutted it! Work alongside Reiman Gardens' staff to scoop the guts out of pumpkins. This is a dirty job, but very fun! Closed toed shoes required!
  • October 8-9 (two-hour shifts, starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m.)
  • Email Kim if you would like to be Nathan's Pumpkin Assistant during a shift this year. Assistants will greet shift volunteers, make sure they are suited up in their gear, and help Nathan get the job done!

*Later shifts may be cancelled if pumpkins are completed early. To ensure you get to enjoy this activity, we encourage signing up earlier in the week.

2. Event Support:

  • Event Assistants - a.k.a. "Stage hands," these volunteers will support our events staff during pumpkin prep with moving pumpkins, cleaning tools, and keeping our volunteer pumpkin prep area clean and tidy for other volunteers
  • Path Prep - help ensure our paths are well-lit, safe, and provide an amazing view for our guests. Volunteers will string lights along the path (Sept 29-30), place haybales (Oct 8), and put pumpkins in place throughout the gardens (Oct 10-12). These roles require a measure of strength and stamina, but are incredibly important to create an overall wonderful Spirits in the Gardens.

3. Spirits in the Gardens:

  • Event Volunteers -  stationed throughout the gardens in pairs to greet visitors, manage flow of traffic, and take photos at photo opportunity stations. (8/shift)
  • Candy Factory - volunteers pass out candy (2 pieces each or a Teal Pumpkin Bag) to our guests at the end of the route. (7 stations/shift, 2-4 volunteers/station)
  • Event Cashiers - a role reserved for volunteers trained to use our POS system, help check in our guests from inside a kiosk at the East Gate entrance! Minimal cash handling required, this will mostly be checking-in pre-registered guests.

Volunteers in Action

Reiman Gardens’ Mission

To educate, enchant, and inspire an appreciation of plants, insects, and the beauty of the natural world.

Volunteer Vision Statement

We envision a world where everyone understands and values the importance of plants, butterflies, and the beauty of nature. We encourage the partnership of employees and volunteers, so that we can achieve our mission and offer the community the best services possible. Volunteers contribute their unique talents, skills, and knowledge of our community to provide personalized attention, enable the paid staff to concentrate on the work for which they were trained, and educate the public about our organization and its cause. We recognize that volunteers provide a resource of talent that is unavailable in any other way. We value this contribution and hope to offer a satisfying, productive, and rewarding experience.

Volunteer Impact at Reiman Gardens

All of you are an important and imperative piece of everything we do at Reiman Gardens. We are so thankful for you and grateful for your ongoing support during this difficult time. Despite all the challenges and setbacks, you accomplished so much. From helping with projects from home, to planting a new garden space, to carving hundreds of pumpkins, you supported our many departments and furthered the mission of the Gardens.
