Activity Description & Instructions

Volunteers help install spring and fall plant materials and assist with the seasonal maintenance and weeding in various gardens. This may include covering/uncovering rose bushes, caging/uncaging shrubs, wrapping/unwrapping trees, light pruning, planting annuals and bulbs, digging up annuals or bulbs, raking leaves, or cutting back perennials.

Schedule

Shifts are often from 9 AM - 12 PM or 1:30 - 4 PM. Exact dates will depend on weather and season. See schedule for confirmed dates.

  • January-February: pruning
  • March-April: uncover roses, uncage shrubs, unwrap trees, rake leaves, cut back perennials 
  • May: dig up bulbs, plant annuals 
  • October: dig up annuals, plant bulbs, rake leaves, cut perennials
  • Late November/early December: cover roses for the winter weather

Training/Support

  • Volunteers must wear closed-toe/heel shoes (sneakers, hiking or steel-toe boots are a good choice)
  • All volunteers will receive onsite training by the appropriate staff member
  • General physical activity associated with some of these assignments has risks. Services provided may include activities that may be hazardous including, but not limited to using garden tools, lifting soil, rocks or other objects, etc.

What to do when you arrive

  • Sign in using Better Impact app on your phone or the kiosk at the front desk.
  • Go to the Events Plaza to meet with your staff lead and other volunteers.
  • Keep an eye on your email the morning-of for weather-related cancellations.
