Education - Education Program Support - Education Prep/Support

We have two projects right now that we'd love volunteer help with!

1. Help us create a Reiman Gardens-themed coloring book!

Volunteers will help draw (manually or digitally) line drawings of things, places, plants and events here at Reiman Gardens to be added to a Reiman Gardens-themed coloring book. You may need to request access from Kim before the links below will work.

Click on this link to go to our spreadsheet of things, places, plants, and more that we'd like to highlight in this book.
  1. Check the "Photos Folder" column to see a few images of each option. We didn't put photos in for all of the options, but we can track photos down if you select something and need a reference. Just shoot me an email.
  2. If you'd like to "claim" one of the subjects, decide if you want to do a simple (think younger kids) or complex (older kids/adult) image, then put your name in the appropriate column. This will blank out the other column so we don't do two images of the same subject.
    1. We'd love if everyone can select at least 5 to complete by March 30, but if you can't do that many, it's okay.
    2. If you want to do more, that's great! We are aiming to have around 30 different images.
    3. The images we absolutely want to make sure we get are in bold.
    4. Please set the page size to US letter (8.5 x 11 inches). You do not need to worry about a margin or border; printing will add that in for us.
    5. If you select one and change your mind, just delete your name from the column so it becomes available for someone else.
  3. In the "Process Completion" column, select
    1. "not started" if you' haven't yet started
    2. "in process" if you're in the process of working on it but it isn't finished yet
    3. "complete" if you're finished with it
  4. Once you finish an image:
    1. For digital images, please save them as a PDF file in this folderusing the naming convention "[category] - [subject] - [your name]" (e.g., If I do the image of Elwood: "Things - Elwood - Kim Hope")
    1. For hand-drawn images, you can drop off at Reiman Gardens. We will scan them into a digital file. Please make sure to leave your name with it so we don't have random drawings and not know who to attribute them to!
  5. Log your hours! Don't forget to log all the time you spend on this project in Better Impact under Education - Adult Education > Education Prep/Support. If you need help with this, please let Kim know.
Thank you for helping us with this project! As a reminder, this is a volunteer project and we will not be able to compensate you for your time nor any of the images you create. We will, however, include your name in the final product. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

2. Help us record audio for self-guided tours

Volunteers will select and record short scripts that provide important information in each area of the garden. These files will help make our gardens more accessible and enhance our visitor experience.

  1. Click on this link to go to our spreadsheet of things, places, plants, and more that we'd like to record for our self-guided tours.
  2. If you'd like to record one of the scripts, write your name in the "Who" column.
    1. Clicking on the URL will take you to the script. None are very long. You do not need to record anything in the boxes, so just skip over those.
    2. We'd like to get an audio file for each of these completed by March 30.
    3. You can do just one, or more than one--it's up to you!
  3. Record your script.
    1. You may use whichever audio recording device or app works for you. (Kim has used this app on her iphone and found it to be very user friendly).
    2. Tips for optimal audio recording:
      1. Hold microphone 3-5 inches from mouth.
      2. Record in a quiet space - some people even suggest recording in a closet, where small space, enclosed walls, and clothing can all help muffle background noises.
      3. Record separate tracks - stop recording when you finish a script, save it, and start a new one. This helps during the editing process.
      4. Warm up before you start recording! If your voice cracks; you yawn, sigh, or sneeze; a loud sound interrupts you: begin that sentence over again. We can always edit out bad parts, but we can't edit audio that is not clean.
      5. Speak slowly and clearly. If you're breathing heavily when you finish recording, you were probably rushing. Listen to your track and record again if it is rushed, slurred, or the audio isn't good.
    3. Save audio files in this folder.
    4. Log your hours under Education Prep/Support in Better Impact or email Kim to log hours for you.  (Include the dates and corresponding amounts of time worked.)
