Senior veterans are stoic, proud individuals who are unfamiliar with reaching out for assistance. Our mission is to serve them.
We recognize that the needs of those we serve are very different compared to those of their younger counterparts, and this is precisely why we specialize in providing services to veterans who served in World War II, Korea, and especially the Vietnam era.
Hero’s Bridge offers innovative programs to assist with the most frequently found needs in this veteran population. Hero’s Bridge strives to improve outcomes in veterans, by connecting younger veterans with older ones. This intergenerational approach yields an improved and more supportive existence for the volunteers and heroes we support.
We serve these veterans by creating a “bridge” to an improved quality of life.
Our Programs and Volunteer opportunities are listed below.
A Battle Buddy Volunteer is a younger Veteran or Veteran-centric individual who visits and calls our Heroes to provide friendship and social interaction to decrease isolation, which results in improved mental well-being. The individuals Hero’s Bridge serve have various needs, some small and some substantial, and working with the Hero’s Bridge Team Volunteers may identify and secure services to improve the quality of life for each Veteran we serve. Volunteers choose if they would like to adopt Veterans to visit/call on a regular monthly or one-time only basis. Battle Buddies are required to briefly document Veteran interactions as well as hours volunteered using online software programs.
Training and ongoing support provided.
Locations Served: Nationwide **when the need becomes available**. The Counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange in Virginia
The Battle Buddy Call Center Volunteer is an individual who makes phone calls to our Heroes to provide a friendly listening ear to decrease their isolation or loneliness and improve their mental well-being. Battle Buddy Call Center Volunteers are required to briefly document Veteran interactions as well as hours volunteered using online software programs.
Training and ongoing support provided.
Locations Served: Nationwide
Many Hero’s Bridge Veterans can no longer drive themselves to doctor appointments, the grocery store, run simple errands, or to see friends and/or loved ones. And many of them have no one else to drive them. These Heroes need rides to get the healthcare they need, food and supplies for daily self-care, or to socialize with other Veterans at our monthly socials and excursions. Some only need help getting around locally a few times a month, some need help getting to the VA in West Virginia once a month, and some need regularly scheduled rides to dialysis on a weekly basis. Hero Drivers transport Veterans in their own cars, transport groups of Veterans to excursions in the Hero’s Bridge van or drive the wheelchair van to provide equal access for the disabled. Hero Drivers needs are posted within Better Impact or sometime within a self-contained communication system called Workplace, by email or phone. Hero Drivers choose based on their own availability if they would like to adopt Veterans to transport on a regular or one-time only basis, and briefly document Veteran interactions and time & mileage within Better Impact and workplace.
Training and ongoing support provided.
Locations Served by Hero Drivers: The Counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange.
Many Hero’s Bridge Veterans have lost or had to give up pets that were dear to them. Others are having difficulty caring for pets they have loved for years. Recognizing the positive impact animals provide in our Veterans’ lives, Paw Patrol Volunteers bring their pets on visits to our Heroes wherever they call home, including various types of facilities for individual visits for socials and monthly set facility schedules. Paw Patrol Volunteers and their furry counterparts conduct visits, help Veterans care for aging pets (assist with veterinary or grooming appointments, walk dogs, help obtain pet food or care items), or to find loving new homes for a Veteran’s beloved canine or feline. Groups, clubs, and individuals are welcome.
Facilities Served: Poet's Walk (Warrenton), White Springs (Warrenton), Spring Oak (Warrenton), The Villa (Warrenton), The Culpeper (Culpeper), Culpeper Health & Rehab (Culpeper), Generations Adult Day Center (Culpeper) and expanding into Orange and Madison Counties.
Training and ongoing support provided.
Locations Served: The Counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange.
Hero's Bridge is looking for an office volunteer to help in our office in Warrenton. This volunteer position includes assisting HB staff with office duties such as:
Answering the Hero's Bridge Phone
Writing Thank You Letters
Special Projects
This volunteer position would operate between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm on Tuesday's & Thursday's preferably. You can volunteer any time during these hours.
Many of the homes our heroes live in served their families well decades ago but are difficult to maintain as veterans age. Some homes are very old and in extreme disrepair, while others require modifications such as grab bars and wheelchair ramps to assist aging in place and maintaining independence. Yard work may also be too difficult a task for the heroes we serve, especially during the change of seasons. Faced with fixed incomes, our veterans often do not have funds to make repairs. Our Home Front team assists with maintenance issues, cleaning, safety assessments and yard work so our heroes maintain a safe and comfortable home.
Hero’s Bridge seeks individuals, groups, and/or companies who are willing to assist veterans when needs arise. Volunteers may be asked to provide supplies and materials for small projects, and Hero’s Bridge leadership will assist and guide with larger projects which may require community support of supplies and materials.
Background checks are required for any volunteer who spends time alone with our Veterans, drives our Veterans or has access to our Veterans personal information.
Key Responsibilities
Location: Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange Counties. Please let us know which county/counties you would be available to assist veterans.

Join our new Social Connection Team!
Hero's Bridge has an exciting opportunity this year to meet local Veterans. If you would like to give back to our Veterans in an entertaining way, we invite you to host a monthly social. Each month, we host a themed event for Veterans to encourage socialization and combat isolation. The location and time are set; hosts are responsible for snacks, drinks, and a themed activity to share with our Veterans. Hero's Bridge manages all communication.
This can be a one-time or repeat commitment. Groups are invited to reach out too. Giving back to our Veterans in a meaningful and rewarding way does so much for them and it will for you too!
