Program Mission Statement
Hero’s Bridge is dedicated to serving older Veterans, age 65 and older. We bridge the gaps in care and services through direct support, advocacy, and community partnerships. Our goal is to honor our Heroes with the same dedication they once showed to our country.
Goals of Position:
As a Hero Driver, you will ensure that older Veterans maintain access to essential services, social connection, and quality of life by providing transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, social outings, and other destinations. Your contribution will reduce isolation, improve access to healthcare, and help aging Veterans live more independently.
Hero Drivers have helped hundreds of aging Veterans regain access to vital care, reconnect with friends and fellow Veterans, and maintain their independence. Your commitment ensures that no Veteran is left behind simply because they cannot drive.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Drive Veterans to medical appointments, grocery stores, or other essential errands
• Use your own vehicle or a Hero’s Bridge vehicle (van or wheelchair van as needed)
• Ensure safe, timely, and respectful transportation
• Communicate effectively with the Battle Buddy and Volunteer Coordinator regarding availability and completed rides
• Check the MyImpact Opportunity tab regularly for new transportation requests
• Log volunteer hours, mileage, and brief notes about each ride in MyImpact after each trip
• Follow all traffic laws and Hero’s Bridge safety protocols
Time Requirements
• Flexible schedule – from a few rides a month to regular weekly commitments
• Duration is ongoing; some rides are one-time, others are recurring.• Hours vary depending on Veteran needs and volunteer availability
Location
• Primary service areas: Fauquier, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, and Orange counties
• Occasional trips to VA hospitals in West Virginia or other locations
Work Environment
• Driving in personal vehicle or Hero’s Bridge van (standard or wheelchair-accessible)
• Moderate lifting may be required for groceries or mobility assistance
• GPS and smartphone access helpful for route planning
Skills & Qualifications
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Reliable vehicle (if using personal car)
• Respectful and patient demeanor
• Ability to assist Veterans with mobility needs (if applicable)
• Comfortable driving locally and to occasional out-of-county locations
No prior military experience is required – just a big heart
Orientation & Training
All volunteers are required to complete an orientation session through MyImpact prior to beginning their role. A background check and basic driver safety training must also be completed. Additional training, such as van operation and wheelchair lift use, will be provided if applicable to the volunteer's responsibilities. Ongoing support and continuing education opportunities will be offered throughout the year to encourage volunteer growth, safety, and engagement.
