Home Front Volunteer Job Description

Goals of Position:

Home Front Volunteers improve the quality of life for Veterans by helping maintain safe, functional, and dignified housing. From essential home repairs to general upkeep, volunteers play a critical role in reducing hazards and improving living conditions, often directly impacting a Veteran’s health, morale, and independence.

Home Front Volunteers have helped Veterans across the nation live in safer, cleaner, and more comfortable homes. From big jobs like building ramps to smaller tasks, volunteers restore a sense of pride and safety for those who once served our country. Your service ensures that aging Heroes can remain in their homes with dignity.

Possible Duties and Responsibilities

Each volunteer brings different skill sets and passions. Below is a list of requests we receive frequently.

• Assist with minor home repairs and safety improvements
• Help with household tasks such as cleaning, organizing, or changing a light bulb
• Work independently or as part of a team, depending on project size
• Bring and use personal protective gear and tools, unless otherwise provided
• Follow all safety guidelines and instructions provided by Hero’s Bridge
• Log volunteer hours, mileage, and brief notes about each task in MyImpact

Time Requirements

• Flexible; typically 2–6 hours per project depending on the scope
• Projects may be one-time or recurring
• Ongoing opportunity; ideal for volunteers available seasonally or regularly

Location

• Veterans’ residences 

Work Environment

• Light physical labor; work may occur in hot, cold, or wet conditions
• May involve heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, kneeling, and climbing stairs
• Volunteers must bring their own gloves, tools, and safety gear (e.g., goggles, ear protection), unless stated otherwise

Skills & Qualifications

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform manual labor
• Basic knowledge of lawn care, repairs, or cleaning tasks
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather
• Dependability, teamwork, and respect for Veterans and their property
• Must follow safety protocols and communicate clearly with project leads

No prior military experience is required – just a big heart 

Orientation & Training

All volunteers are required to complete an orientation session through MyImpact before beginning their role, along with a background check. If completing within a group, at least one person must complete the orientation process and background check. Ongoing support and continuing education opportunities will be available throughout the year to foster volunteer growth, confidence, and engagement.

Supervision

• Reports directly to the Battle Buddy and Volunteer Coordinator
