Goals of Position:
As a Battle Buddy Volunteer, you play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for veterans through friendly, consistent visits or calls. Volunteers are paired with veterans to offer companionship, meaningful conversation, and a caring presence. Your time and attention help restore connection, dignity, and hope to those who have served.
Battle Buddy Volunteers make a measurable difference, helping veterans feel truly seen, heard, and valued. Volunteers often form deep, lasting relationships, while veterans frequently say these visits or calls are the highlight of their week. This program builds cross-generational bonds, promotes healing, and strengthens communities nationwide.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Visit an assigned veteran in person on a weekly or bi-weekly basis
• Offer emotional support, active listening, and companionship
• Engage in conversations, games, walks, or shared hobbies based on mutual interests
• Maintain respectful and appropriate boundaries
• Log visit notes, hours, and mileage in MyImpact as requested
• Communicate any concerns with the Battle Buddy and Volunteer Coordinator
Time Requirements
2 - 4 hours per month, flexible scheduling based on mutual availability. Minimum 6 month commitment preferred. Start dates are rolling.
Location
Visits take place in the veteran’s home or facility. This is an in-person volunteer role; remote interaction is limited.
Work Environment
Volunteers will visit veterans in residential or assisted living settings. No special tools required. Volunteers should be comfortable sitting, walking, and conversing for extended periods. Physical requirements are minimal but may include light walking or assistance (non-medical).
Skills & Qualifications
• Basic Skills: Dependability, punctuality, basic record-keeping
• People Skills: Empathy, patience, active listening, cultural sensitivity
• Technical Skills: None required; comfort with email or mobile phone check-ins is helpful
No prior military experience is required – just a big heart and a willingness to listen.
Orientation & Training
All volunteers are required to complete an orientation session through MyImpact before beginning their role, along with a background check. Ongoing support and continuing education opportunities will be available throughout the year to foster volunteer growth, confidence, and engagement.
Supervision
Volunteers report to the Battle Buddy and Volunteer Coordinator
