Animal adoptions

Position Function & Organizational

Impact:

  • Work towards our mission of adopting out as many pets as possible to suitable forever homes and providing appropriate pet ownership education.

Time Commitment & Location:   PAC   2 hours 2-3x a week.

  • Counselors must volunteer on a regular basis to remain up to date with policies and procedures; must volunteer a minimum of 10 hours each month with a preference for committing to the same 2-hours (or more) shift each week.
  • Regular, required meetings, which will be held the first Friday of every month; will also take place to discuss changes to policies, questions and concerns as a group.

Goals:

  • Assist Animal Care Attendants with adoption counseling to increase adoptions.
  • Engage with potential adopters to answer questions and direct as needed.
  • Facilitate a warm and inviting atmosphere for all PAC visitors.
  • Provide knowledge on our adoptable pets, best practices, and suggested pet ownership skills.
  • Match appropriate pets with families.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Speak with potential adopters about adopting.
  • Provide additional information and support to adopters; ask staff for assistance with any questions or concerns during adoption counseling.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must maintain a positive, professional friendly attitude with the public.
  • Comfortable interacting with dogs.
  • Able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Ability to follow specific directions from staff.
  • Basic dog breed characteristics.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Must wear closed-toed shoes for protection when handling animals

Cat Care Provider

Are you a Cat Lover? 

Position Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Provide basic care for the PAC cats and kittens, including cleaning.
  • Assist Animal Care Attendants with cleaning in the cat and kitten area.
  • Socialize with cats and kittens and provide enrichment.

Time Commitment & Location Work:

  • PAC
  • Volunteer minimum of 6 hours per month.

Goals:

  • Clean and sanitized shelter environment
  • Provide care for pets at the PAC

Core Responsibilities:

  • Check in with staff at the beginning of each shift.
  • Keep cat and kitten areas clean.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Comfortable interacting with volunteer-approved cats and kittens.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions.
  • Must be able sit, bend, or stoop.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds

Dog Care Provider

Are you a Dog Lover?

Patience is perhaps the most important quality for someone who wants to work with dogs. We need someone who is familiar with large dog breeds and has some experience handling them.

Position Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Provide enrichment opportunities for our animals.
  • Assist Animal Care Attendants with cleaning in the dog area.

Time Commitment & Location of Work:

  • PAC
  • Volunteer minimum of 6 hours per month.

Goals:

  • Clean and sanitized shelter environment
  • Provide care for pets at the PAC

Core Responsibilities:

  • Check in with staff at the beginning of each shift
  • Keep dog areas clean

Qualification & Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Ability to follow specific instructions
  • Maintain current knowledge and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.

Foster Care

Are you an expert at giving love and attention to animals?

Our foster caregivers provide much-needed temporary homes for animals who require extra love and support before becoming available for adoption.

This can include animals such as orphaned kittens, nursing mothers, recovering surgery patients, and pets who need help correcting their behavior.

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Assist the animals by getting them out of the shelter and into loving homes.
  • Increase the shelter’s capacity to save lives.
  • Helps fulfill our mission and helps the hard to adopt animals by getting them into a stable environment.
  • Assists the medical staff on taking care of medical animals
  • Assists with bottle feeding and raising pups or kittens.

Time Commitment & Location:

  • Your home

Goals:

  • Assist with increasing our life saving missions.

  • Administer medications.
  • Show animals respect and kindness

 

Fundraising

Raise much needed funds for our shelter!

Fundraising is the process of gathering voluntary contributions of money or other resources, by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies.

These donations support everything from grooming, to food, veterinary care, to overhead costs of running the shelter.

 

Office Helper

Help our Administrative Team create a great experience for all volunteers.

Tasks may include answering telephone inquiries, orienting new volunteers, data entry and other administrative tasks. 

Function & Organizational Impact:

  • To assist the public in the front office area
  • Assist office staff

Time Commitment & Location of Work:

  • Volunteer 2 to 4 hours a day/3 to 4 times a week.
  • PAC

Goals:

  • Greet and engage visitors in a professional and warm welcoming manner.
  • Assist the public and answer questions. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Greets’ visitors.
  • Assist with the tag machine.
  • Make dog, cat and kitten adoption packets.
  • Contact clinic owners.
  • Decorate the office for upcoming holidays.
  • Prepare and fill rabies tags.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Dependability and professionalism.
  • Basic office skills.

Grounds Maintenance

 

 

 

Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Assist with general grounds maintenance.

Time Commitment & Location of work:

  • PAC
  • Volunteer minimum of 2 hours 3 to 4 times a week

Goals: To maintain and upkeep the grounds around our building.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular landscaping maintenance weeding, planting flowers and watering plants.
  • Gardening
  • Picks up trash around the building.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

 

 

Vet Service

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Assist Vet Technicians.
  • Increase our surgery capacity for getting more animals spay and neutered

Time Commitment & Location:

  • PAC
  • 4-hour shifts, 2 days a week.

Goals:

  • Assist with general clinic operations

Core Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Surgery Room prep
  • Data entry
  • Surgery Runner
  • Clean & stock
  • Surgery packs
  • Inventory.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Able to stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to follow specific instructions

Transportation Assistant

Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Transporting pets to and from Vet clinic.
  • Daily arrears

Time Commitment & Location of Work:

  • Volunteer minimum of 2 hours 2 times week
  • PAC

Goals: Allow staff to focus on animals at PAC

Core Responsibilities:

  • Drop Off & Pick up rabies tags and vouchers.
  • Shopping for supplies.
  • Transporting animals to and from Local Animal Hospital
  • Transporting Feral Cats
  • Transporting pets to and from rescue groups

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to follow specific instructions from staff
  • Dependability and professionalism.
  • Provide your own vehicle and proof of insurance.
  • Must be willing to transport all type of animals (kenneled)
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational and department policies and procedures.

 

Operation Sterile Feral

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Low cost spay and neuter service for feral and barn cats.

Time Commitment & Location of work:

  • Once a month
  • 5-hour shift

Goals:

  • To help the citizens and feral cats within our community to reduce and stabilize the population of cats. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • General Clinic operations

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to follow specific instructions.
  • No allergies to cats.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, bend and lift.
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time.

 

Prep Room

Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Assist Staff and volunteers with general housekeeping task
  • Special projects as assigned

Time Commitment & Location of work:

  •  PAC,
  • Volunteer minimum of 2 hours per day 2 days a week.

Goals:

  • Assist staff and volunteers in maintaining a clean and organized area.
  • Allow staff additional time to focus on animal area. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Laundry
  • Dishwashing pet bowls and sanitizing
  • Organizing and relocating supplies and donations as directed
  • Special projects as assigned (may include re-organizing areas, deep cleaning, etc.)

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to walk, stoop, bend and lift
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Environment may have occasional loud noises and odor. (e.g. dog barking, etc.)

 

Adoption Counselor

Adoption follow up calls

 

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Place follow-up calls to all adopters within the first few weeks of adoption. 
  • The PAC will provide a phone-call script to use when these calls.

Time Commitment & Location:

  • PAC
  • Must commit to a minimum of 12 hours each month, with a commitment of 3 to 4 hours each week.

Goals:

  • To make sure new pets are successfully adjusting to their new homes.
  • To improve adoption service.
  • Provides us with great stories and information that could help us in future adoptions.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Making calls to post adopters
  • Communicate results after completing calls and including calls that require follow-up from medical or behavioral

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Communicate effectively and courteously.
  • Comfortable making calls and talking to new people
  • Documentation skills
  • Basic animal knowledge.
  • Sit for extended periods of time at a computer station or work desk.

Photographer

Position Function & Organization Impact:

  • Provide quality photos to highlight and market PAC adoptable pets.
  • Assist Kennel Supervisor getting quality photos of adoptable pets.

Time Commitment & Location of Work:

  • PAC
  • Volunteer a minimum of 2 hours a week.

Goals:

  • Provide quality photos of adoptable pets.
  • Work with PAC staff to focus on specific photo needs
  • Improve adaptability of our adoptable pets by increasing awareness.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Kennel Supervisor to determine needs and plan of action.
  • Provide quality photos of adoptable pets for their profiles and marketing materials.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Comfortable interacting with volunteer- approved PAC animals.
  • Must be able to follow specific instructions.
  • Must provide their own camera and equipment.
  • Warm, friendly, enthusiastic personality.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.

Doggie Dreams Field Trip

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Assist the kennel in taking dogs out of the shelter on short field trips.
  • Only animals pre-approved by shelter staff.
  • Increase the shelter animal’s mental stimulation and helps socialize the dogs in different environments.

Time Commitment & Location:

  • PAC start from to various locations throughout St Charles County.
  • 2-hour shifts, 1-2 days a week.

Goals:

  • Assist with social enrichment with the dogs

Core Responsibilities:

  • You’ll oversee the dog while
  • Ensure the dog does not run away.
  • How to safely transport dogs.
  • To help get the dog adopted.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Able to walk and transport dogs in your car.
  • Must be able to follow specific instructions.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds at least.
  • No children allowed on field trips.
  • Double leashed with harness and County tag.
  • Basic handling of leashing a dog, walking dogs and getting them out of the kennel.

 

Petsmart & Petco Cleaning

Functions & Organizational Impact:

  • Daily cage cleaning 7 days a week
  • Weekly deep cage cleaning

Time Commitment & Location of Work

  • Depending on how many cats/kittens are at either location it could take up to 4 hours.
  • Cleaning is usually done first thing every morning when the store opens. Deep Cleaning weekly.

Goals:

  • Assist with daily cleaning of cat kennels.
  • Help with dishes.
  • Socialize with the cats/kittens and provide enrichment

  • Check in daily with Store Manger to learn of specific needs.
  • Keep the area clean.
  • Assist with cleaning dishes.
  • Scoop litter boxes.
  • Engage with potential adopters.
  • Socialize with cats and kittens.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Comfortable interacting with cats and kittens.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Enjoying engaging with visitors, volunteers and staff.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.

Dog Walkers

Position Function & Organizational Impact:

  • Provide enrichment opportunities for our dogs.
  • Assist Animal Care Attendant with dogs.

Time Commitment & Location:

  • volunteer a minimum of 10 hours each month with a preference for committing to the same 2-hours (or more) shift each week.

Core responsibilities:

  • Check in with staff at the beginning of each shift
  • Utilize provided materials to know which dogs can be walked.
  • Use appropriate gear as needed per pet.
  • Pick up dog waste as needed
  • Remain in designated walking areas.
  • Make notations regarding pets being walked, behaviors, etc.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Comfortable interacting with volunteer-approved dogs.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions.
  • Enjoys engaging with PAC visitors, volunteers and staff.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Regular access to email to receive updates.

Off- Site Adoption Events

Function: Increase community awareness of PAC and our mission statement.    

Time Commitment & Location

  • Events are usually scheduled for weekends.
  • The duration of the event can be up to 4 hours.
  • Various community events within the county.
  • These events are typically held outdoors.
  • You may be required to provide your own transportation to the adoption event.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with the setup of the informational adoption booth.
  • Assist with animal handling.
  • Assist with questions from the public.
  • Present a positive, professional experience to the public.
  • Ensure safety of pets and public and pets.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Foster Coordinator

Foster coordinator will oversea the timely placement of animals into foster care. This position will be part of a lifesaving team.  

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASK

  • In conjunction with the Lifesaving Team, implement foster care program work plans, goals, and objectives.
  • Identify shelter animals for foster care program and coordinate their ongoing care disposition with foster care providers. 
  • Report tom Lifesaving Programs Coordinator and Shelter Operations Manger weekly to measure, analyze, and implement strategies to meet current and future needs for our foster care program.
  • Recruit, qualify and orient foster care providers in conjunction with volunteer coordinator.  
  • Accurately maintain all required records in the shelter's database in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance of program participates with all policies and laws and in support of the shelter's mission and goals.
  • Contribute to the program and services that support lifesaving initiatives including but not limited to the foster to adopt program.
  • Act as a resource for emails, phone calls and visitors regarding foster care providers. 
  • Maintain all animals information in Chameleon and other required paperwork in a way that ensures all information is communicated appropriately to our foster base.
  • With coordination from Shelter Operations Manager and the Lifesaving Programs Coordinator, implement programs and marketing strategies that increase the number of animals placed into foster care.
  • Manage on-call foster care emergencies after hour calls.

Mission Statement

The Division of Humane Services promotes the health, safety and welfare of animals and people in St. Charles County.  The division operates the Pet Adoption Center, which offers dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, shapes and colors into loving homes.  To ensure proper treatment of animals and to protect St. Charles County residents, the division is responsible for enforcing the St. Charles County Animal Control Ordinance.  In addition, staff work to reunite missing pets with their owners and offers assistance for those seeking help in raising their pets.
