Friendly Faces - Lister Hospital

Life on the wards can be dull for patients, so we are asking for Friendly Faces Volunteers to spend an hour or so when they can, going around a ward and chatting with patients who are up for a conversation.  You can also offer to read to patients or do crosswords and other puzzles with them if they like - generally helping them to pass some time in pleasant company.  Conversation and social interaction, together with the mental stimulation of listening to a story, or doing puzzles, works wonders on patients' mental well being, and is recognised as being an important component in health care settings.  If you are a good listener and enjoy chatting with people, and have odd hours to spare here and there, then this could be the flexible volunteering opportunity for you. We can provide resources for you to take with you on the wards - pre-printed crosswords and puzzles, short stories, colouring sheets and pencils, and various other activities.  You tell us when you're free and how long you have, and we will find you a ward and patients to visit!

Gardener

There are quite a number of gardens hidden around the Lister Hospital, and they are almost all maintained with volunteer help.  These spaces are of great value to staff and patients, all of whom use them to get away from the busy atmosphere of the ward for a few minutes, to relax and unwind amongst the trees, plants, birds and peace and quiet.  If you enjoy gardening and would be happy to help out with general maintenance jobs, such as weeding, pruning, sweeping and general tidying, then please do get in touch.  No particular expertise is necessary, but it would be lovely to hear from people who can offer us advice and guidance as well.
