The East Coast Music Awards: Festival and Conference (ECMA) is a five-day, non-stop musical celebration showcasing and recognizing the best of East Coast artists and music. This year, ECMA is heading to Sydney, Cape Breton  for our 38th year, bringing hundreds of Atlantic Canadian artists, industry professionals, Canadian and international delegates, and music fans together for an exciting week of events including our flagship award show, festival showcases, conference sessions, a Fan Fest, and so much more.

Don't miss any of the action - join us in the host city of Sydney, Cape Breton as we light up the stages with East Coast music from May 20-24th.

Of course, this event is not possible without the tremendous help of our Volunteers! We're so grateful to have individuals donate their valuable time to make this event a reality. Whether it's selling tickets to an artist showcase, stage managing at one of our venues, or transporting artists and delegates around town, there are an abundance of opportunities to choose from.

General Interests

Awards Show & Ambassadors Team

Event Support

The Awards Show support role is responsible for assisting with set-Up & tear down, preparing the red carpet with the event team; this includes setting up signage, lights, tables, etc. This role is managed by the ECMA Awards Show team.

Event Ambassadors

The Event Ambassadors support role act as greeters and guides for delegates, musicians and the general public attending the Awards Show. Ushering sponsors and artists to assigned seats, relaying information, and assisting in other tasks as needed. This role is managed by the ECMA Awards Show team.

Event Runners

The Awards Show runners are responsible for helping organize, guide, and escort artists and nominees on the red carpet and to their media commitments during the Thursday night awards show. Applicants should be strong communicators who are able to maintain professionalism, and ideally have experience working with talent in a live show environment.

Scanning/Box Office/Merch Team

BOX OFFICE

The box office support role includes selling tickets, scanning tickets, taking attendance, line management, counting capacity, troubleshooting (RE: ticketing and scanning) and using small electronics such as ticket scanners and/or tablets. This role is managed by the ECMA Box Office team. 

  • Cash handling / customer service skills or experience is required for this position

  • Computer literacy and experience with ticketing systems will be considered an asset 

CONFERENCE

The conference services and ticket scanning support role includes scanning tickets, taking attendance, troubleshooting (RE: ticketing and scanning) and using small electronics such as ticket scanners and/or tablets. This role may also function as support to the conference services area to help artists and delegates sign in. This role is managed by the Conference Manager.

  • Cash handling / customer service skills or experience is required for this position

  • Computer literacy and experience with ticketing systems will be considered an asset

MERCH SALES

The merch seller volunteers at the merch table and sells artists or ECMA merch. Participants are responsible for counting merchandise and cash. This support role is managed by the Finance Department.

Song and Stories Series and Rogers TV Team

Songs and Stories Team 

Volunteers will assist the Songs & Stories Host and tech team. This is a chance to see a live podcast in operation. Tech skills are not required and tasks will include errands like grabbing cables, water, helping with moving things for set changes, etc. Volunteers will greet artists in the hotel lobby, guide them to the interview/performance area, and introduce them to the tech team and host. This role involves direct interaction with artists and is managed by Anthony Carew, the Director of Programming.     

  • Radio ECMA runs from noon to 7:30PM Wednesday to Saturday of the festival

  • Age requirement 16+

Rogers TV Interview Team

Volunteers will greet artists in the venue lobby and guide them to the waiting area to enter the Rogers TV interview/performance space. This role involves direct interaction with artists. This role is managed by Anthony Carew the Director of Programming.     . 

  • Rogers TV interviews run on Friday and Saturday from noon to 8:00PM.
  • Age requirement 16+

 

Operations Team

Set-Up & Tear-Down Crew

This team of volunteers is crucial in helping to setup the festival and then tear it down. You will work with other teams to make the host hotel and venues festival and conference ready, and then pack up and load out at the end of ECMA's.

  • Volunteers must be able to lift and push heavy items, and able to stand and work long hours.

  • Experience an asset, but not required

  • No age requirement for this role

 

Sponsorship Team

Sponsorship

Sponsorship

The signage and sponsorship support role is tasked with placing sponsorship signage in venues, helping to pack and create gift bags, creating sponsor envelopes with tickets and passes. Some roles with sponsorship may be public facing and involve support at sponsor hospitality events.  Responsibilities may include sponsor registration, sponsor signage placement, hospitality at sponsor events and delivery of assets to sponsors. This support role is managed by the Sponsorship team.

  • Customer service experience is considered an asset.

 
 

Stage / Tech Assistant Team

Tech Loading and Setup

The Tech Loading and Setup includes supporting show production requirements, loading technical gear from trucks and trailers into the venue. This role is managed by the Technical Director or designated crew member as required.

  • Volunteers must be able to lift and push heavy items, and able to stand and work long hours

  • Experience an asset, but not required

  • No age requirement for this role

Stage/Tech

The tech & stage support role includes helping with venue and show production requirements. Tasks and activities may include stage management or helping artists get to the stage on time. This role is managed by the ECMA Technical Director and designated managers.

  • Availability for day-time sound checks and evening and late-night showcases is required.

  • Previous experience with stage management, or in event management would be considered an asset

  • Whenever possible, ECMA will assign one (1) stage to an individual; therefore availability for late nights over multiple days will increase your chance of being selected for this crucial team

  • 8 hour shifts are typical for this role

  • Age Requirement 19+

 

Transportation Team

Transportation

The transportation support role includes safely driving staff, crew, or artists between venues and accommodations as necessary. ECMA provides fully insured vehicles for transportation support roles. Please note, most vehicles are minivan sized. This role is managed by the ECMA Transportation Coordinator.

  • Drivers must be at least 25 years of age, have a valid driver's license, and provide a copy of their license. A driver's abstract may be requested.

  • For communication purposes during volunteer shifts, applicants with access to a personal cell phone with data will be considered first for this role
  • Drivers must be comfortable driving minivans and larger non-compact type vehicles.

 

Venue Management Team

Venue Greeter & Usher 

The venue greeter stays in place at showcase venues and helps oversee and welcomes ticket holders. Venue greeter tasks include showing ticket holders the correct entrance or exit to the venue, helping ticket holders to seating, greeting ticket holders in line and managing pass, wristband and cash sales line. This role is managed by the Box Office Manager.

  • Customer service experience considered an asset

Venue Manager

The venue manager support role stays in place at venues and helps oversee and support general venue operations. Tasks include checking in other volunteers, ensuring safety procedures, ensuring operations procedures, and operating small electronic devices such as scanners or tablets. This role is managed by the ECMA Marketing, Box Office and the ECMA Operations team.

  • Previous experience with venue management, or in event management would be considered an asset.

  • Whenever possible, ECMA will assign one (1) venue to an individual Venue Manager; therefore availability for late nights over multiple days will increase your chance of being selected for this crucial team.

  • 8 hour shifts are typical for this role

Social Media Team /Photography Team

Social Media

Social Media volunteers help create engaging content across a variety of social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook during the ECMA Festival & Conference. This role is managed by the Marketing Manager

Note: Any volunteer applications received that specify Social Media or Photography are sent to the Marketing Manager for vetting.

  • Must have personal phone with camera and data
  • *It is mandatory to send relevant social accounts or portfolio of past works to be considered for this team.

 

Photography

Volunteers will have access to various festival activities and will be provided the opportunity to provide engaging content and capture ECMA highlights. This role is managed by the Marketing Manager

Information / Registration Team

Information

Information Support volunteers provide guidance and festival details to guests, artists, and delegates. They help direct people to the right locations, share key information about the festival, and highlight what Sydney, CB has to offer. This role is coordinated by the Operations Team. 

  • Strong customer service skills or previous experience are required for this position.

REGISTRATION

Registration Support volunteers are often the first point of contact for music industry delegates and artists during ECMA. They provide essential information to help attendees get started with the festival and conference. This role is managed by the Artist Relations Team.

Volunteer Services

VOLUNTEER CENTRE

This volunteer support role stays in place at the Volunteer Center and helps new volunteers sign up in person, answers any FAQ questions, and helps to keep food and beverage stocked for volunteer. This role helps volunteers pick up their passes, t-shirts and gives them any initial information they need about the festival and conference. This role is managed by the Volunteer Manager.

  • This role is perfect for individuals 16+
  • This role offers significant flexibility and can be modified to suit diverse needs and capabilities

 

VOLUNTEER OUTREACH

The outreach support role attends activities and events prior to or during the ECMA festival and conference to distribute promotional materials, recruit volunteers, and/or solicit donations. This support role is managed by the Volunteer Manager

  • This role is perfect for individuals 16+

Conference/Export Program

The ECMA team brings in buyers from all over the world to talk to, listen to, and hopefully work with our East Coast artists. The ECMA 2026 Conference - 'The Business of Music' will feature professional development sessions for artists and industry.

 

Conference Services and Ticket Scanning 

Conference services volunteers may be assisting with setting up rooms for workshops and panels, making sure that facilitators have everything they need, greeting participants and scanning passes or checking pre-registration lists, ensuring the sessions start and end on time, and helping with activities during the sessions (like handing out worksheets, passing microphones for audience questions, helping with music or video playback etc.)

Conference shifts are great for volunteers with an interest in learning about music industry topics. This role is managed by the Conference Manager.

  • These shifts run anywhere from 9am until 6pm
  • Customer Service skills are a must
  • Volunteers who speak fluent French and English are a great fit for this team/role

 

Export Program

The Export Buyers program volunteers provide support to the accelerator program activities and team in specific areas including the Export Showcase Series, Two For The Show, One-on-one Business Meetings, International Business Lounge, Export Buyers Luncheon (private), and assisting delegates onsite throughout the weekend.

  • Volunteers who speak fluent French and English are a great fit for this team/role

  • Customer service skills are a must

  • These shifts run anywhere from 9am until 5pm

It is the ECMA's mission to develop, advance and celebrate East Coast Canadian music, its artists and its industry professionals throughout the region and around the world. We advocate for our members to ensure they can sustain music careers while based in Canada’s Atlantic region.

The East Coast Music Association (ECMA), a regional collaboration of people in the music industry of Atlantic Canada. As a registered non-profit Association dedicated to the music of Atlantic Canada. Membership is open to all individuals working in any sector of the music industry or those who support the music industry. Membership includes musicians, artists, agents, managers, record companies, studios, media, related corporation and retailers.

Over the past 38 years, the association has been witness to the successes and struggles of hundreds of East Coast artists. ECMA has been a catalyst, bringing music industry representatives from all over the world here to the East Coast to discover and cultivate one of our greatest exportable resources - our music. By doing so, we have also helped build a regional and professional music industry in our corner of the world, one that supports and develops the careers of both the artists and the industry.
