Discharge Suite Volunteers
Discharge Suite Volunteer
Discharge Suite Volunteers support a smooth, efficient hospital experience by assisting patients, staff and departments with non-clinical tasks. This role offers an opportunity to learn about the hospital environment and work alongside the many teams involved in patient care and safety.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Assisting with patient discharge and wheelchair transportation
- Completing errands for hospital staff and departments
- Maintaining visitor wheelchair availability at hospital entrances
- Providing courteous support to patients, visitors, staff and fellow volunteers
Role requirements:
This role requires regular walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs throughout the shift. Wheelchair training is provided. Strong interpersonal skills and a helpful, service-oriented approach are essential.
Information Desk Volunteers
Information Desk Volunteer
Information Desk Volunteers provide a welcoming first impression for patients, visitors and their companions arriving through the hospital visitor entrance. They offer hospitality, information and assistance to help visitors navigate the hospital with confidence.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Greeting patients, visitors and companions
- Providing directions, general information and escort services
- Serving as a liaison between visitors, patients and hospital departments as needed
- Delivering flowers and other items to patient rooms
- Responding proactively and courteously to visitor questions and needs
Role requirements:
This role requires regular walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs throughout the shift. Wheelchair training is provided. Volunteers should be friendly, approachable and comfortable assisting a wide range of visitors.
Perianestheia Volunteers
Perianethesia Volunteers
Perianesthesia Volunteers support patients, families and clinical teams before and after surgery. This role helps create a welcoming, organized environment while assisting with non-clinical patient care, unit preparation and visitor communication.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Receiving direction from the charge nurse regarding patients who need escorting to Pre-Op or PACU areas
- Escorting patients and family members to appropriate waiting, care or discharge areas
- Assisting with patient discharge
- Providing warm blankets and refreshments to patients when requested by a nurse
- Preparing surgical stretchers with clean linens, gowns, pillows, clothing bags, socks and surgical hats
- Disinfecting and preparing surgical stretchers, wheelchairs and lounge chairs between patient use according to established procedures
- Supporting clinical staff by running errands, restocking unit and bedside supplies, and preparing IV start kits
- Providing backup support for other Pre-Op/PACU volunteer areas as needed
- Covering the waiting room desk when the nurse liaison is unavailable, including welcoming families, providing updates when appropriate and contacting charge RNs for specific information
Role requirements:
Volunteers should be comfortable interacting with patients, families and clinical staff in a fast-paced surgical environment. This role may require regular walking, escorting patients and visitors, preparing supplies, and following infection-prevention procedures.
Emergency Department Volunteers
Emergency Department Volunteer
Emergency Department Volunteers provide non-clinical support to patients and their families in a fast-paced care environment. They help create a warm, supportive atmosphere while serving as a liaison between patients, visitors, Emergency Department staff and the security team.
Primary responsibilities may include:
- Welcoming and assisting patients, families and visitors
- Providing general information and directions within the Emergency Department
- Supporting communication between patients, families, clinical staff and security personnel
- Helping maintain a calm, organized and welcoming waiting area
- Assisting with additional non-clinical needs as assigned
Role requirements:
Volunteers should be comfortable taking initiative and interacting with patients, families and staff in a busy environment. This role may include assisting with patient transportation by wheelchair. Wheelchair training is provided. Strong interpersonal skills, a calm demeanor and a service-oriented approach are essential.
