Inpatient Unit Volunteer
Inpatient Unit Volunteers are assigned to a specific patient care unit and become part of that unit’s support team. Volunteer opportunities may be available in medical-surgical, intensive care, post-surgical and specialty units, such as postpartum.
Under the direction of nursing personnel and the unit secretary, volunteers provide non-clinical support that helps create a warm, welcoming environment for patients and their families.
Primary responsibilities may include:
- Providing companionship and conversation to patients
- Answering call bells and communicating patient needs to staff as appropriate
- Assisting with patient discharge
- Restocking unit supplies
- Supporting patients, families and staff with additional non-clinical needs as assigned
Role requirements:
Volunteers should be comfortable taking initiative and working as part of a patient care team. This role requires regular walking and may include pushing patients in wheelchairs throughout the shift. Wheelchair training is provided. Strong interpersonal skills, a helpful attitude and a service-oriented approach are essential.
