Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteer Work Party

Join Urban Green Newcastle to help breathe new life into our parks across the city.

You could be clearing pathways, tending flowerbeds, repairing fences, helping to keep the park litter free or creating new habitat for wildlife.  No previous experience is required, but a willingness to get stuck in and work as part of a team is.

Everyone is welcome, volunteer sessions usually run weekdays 10am - 1pm in a variety of our parks every week.

Nature Education Volunteer

Urban Green Newcastle is working hard to protect the city’s pollinators through our Beelines North East project, in partnership with Northumberland Wildlife Trust. Through this project we want to help connect young people with nature and will be running a variety of engagement events across our parks, that include exciting nature trails and brilliant bug hunts. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to work alongside our Education Officer, helping run fun, interactive activities for school children, families, and the local community.

 What’s involved?

By becoming an Urban Green Nature Education Volunteer, you will be helping support our Beelines project by connecting people with nature through various outdoor activities.

  • Help deliver education sessions - You will be working closely with our Education Officer, helping deliver enjoyable, outdoor learning sessions to children aged 5-11. These sessions are designed to encourage children to have fun exploring nature and learn outside of the classroom.
  • Help run park events - You will help run nature-based events in our parks that encourage nature discovery, from hunting for minibeasts to building bee hotels. These events are designed to engage families from the local community.

Who would this role suit?

We are a small team, so a can-do attitude and sense of fun is vital in this volunteer role. We are looking for people who are:

  • Able to engage with children and members of the local community.
  • Able to learn teaching materials and lead education sessions.
  • Enthusiastic about natural world, with some knowledge about local wildlife and habitats.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Able to commit to volunteering at least twice a month.

In order to work with children, volunteers will be asked to take a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Urban Green Clean

We need your help to keep our fabulous parks and open spaces free from litter.

Urban Green Clean is sponsored by the LGA Foundation and volunteers are needed in all parks across the City. Those signing up to help will be issued with litter pickers, gloves, bin bags and hi visibility vests. They will also be given instructions to keep themselves safe.  There are no guidelines about how often volunteers should take part, just whenever they can help.

Self-led Park Volunteer

Urban Green Newcastle is working hard to breathe new life into Newcastle’s Parks and Allotments. We want to ensure that our greenspaces are safe and welcoming places for everyone to enjoy, and we need your help to make our parks the best places they can be for both people and wildlife.

Our Parks volunteers work independently, or within a group to look after their local park. This volunteer role allows you to volunteer in your local park at a time that suits you.

By Getting involved you could:

  • Help to maintain and re-generate areas of the park.
  • Meet new people whilst keeping fit.
  • Help members of the public enjoy the park and get the most from their visit.
  • Support safety in the park.
  • Be involved in how the park could be developed into the future.

  • Undertake gardening and general maintenance tasks
  • Help to ensure the Park is safe and litter free.
  • Help others to enjoy the Park
  • Act as the eyes and ears within the Park

Who would this role suit?

We are a small team, so a can-do attitude and sense of fun is vital in this volunteer role. We are looking for people who are:

  • Able to work independently in the park at their own pace. This role will often involve working without the direct supervision of a member of staff, so confidence to work on your own is essential.
  • Enthusiastic about working outdoors across the seasons.
  • Happy to be part of a team and learn new skills.
  • Interested in horticulture and the natural world.

Pets' Corner Volunteer Keeper

Pets Corner is a city farm that is accessible to everyone, situated right in the heart of Newcastle. A much-loved visitor attraction, Pets Corner has been in Jesmond Dene for over 60 years. It gives members of the public the opportunity to experience a slice of the countryside without leaving the city.

By getting involved you will:

  • Gain skills and experience working with animals
  • Help others to learn about the array of animals kept at Pets Corner
  • Develop your knowledge of visitor experience and working with members of the public
  • Be a part of a brand-new charity that is breathing new life into Newcastle’s parks and allotments

What’s involved?

Pets Corner is a busy working farm and visitor attraction that is open to the general public. As a volunteer you will get stuck in with our staff team and take on various tasks throughout the day, including:

  • Assisting with the care and welfare of animals at Pets Corner.

Supported by  our staff you will take on the routine tasks of animal care, complete healthcare checks and assist with medication for animals, help with handling and restraining of animals when needed, develop new ideas to provide animal enrichment and of course keep the animals clean, fed and watered.

  • Engaging with members of the public.

As a visitor attraction we want to engage the public with our work and encourage their interest in the range of animals that we have on site. This might involve chatting with the public whilst you are going about your duties, explaining what you are doing and answering questions about the animals that you are interacting with. You might also be able to get involved in events, school visits and workshops.

  • General site maintenance and repair.

Making sure that the enclosures are secure and safe for both the public and animals is a vital part of the work of our Pets Corner team.

Who would this role suit?

We are a small team, so we’re looking for volunteers with a can-do attitude, a sense of fun, and a willingness to get muddy! Our ideal volunteer would be someone:

  • With relevant experience in working with animals.

Pets Corner has a range of animals from farm livestock to domestic pets and birds. We would love to hear from people who have prior experience in working in this environment. This experience is not necessarily essential, but a love of animals is!

  • Working towards training or qualification in Animal Care.

There are plenty of opportunities to learn and develop new skills and we can support you with qualifications that you might be undertaking.

  • Happy to work hard whatever the weather.

We work in all weathers throughout the year, from mucking out pens to fixing fences this is a physically demanding role. We want people who aren’t afraid to get stuck in!

Play Area Volunteer

Urban Green Newcastle (UGN) is working hard to breathe new life into Newcastle’s Parks and Allotments. We want to ensure that our greenspaces are safe and welcoming places for everyone to enjoy, and we need your help to make our Parks the best places they can be for people and wildlife.

By Getting involved in UGN Park Play Areas you could:

  • Help to maintain and re-generate UGN Play Areas of the Park.
  • Support safety in UGN Park Play Areas.
  • Be involved in how the Park Play Areas could be developed into the future.
  • Help members of the public enjoy UGN Park Play Areas and get the most from their visit.
  • Meet new people whilst keeping fit and healthy.
  • Have fun. Children have fun in our Parks but they do not have the monopoly, adults having fun in our Parks is important too.

What’s involved?

By becoming an UGN Play Area Volunteer you will be helping us to make sure that our Park Play Areas are places that are safe and everyone can feel proud of.

As an UGN Play Area Volunteer you will:

  • Undertake visual observations and general maintenance tasks

UGN Park Play Areas have a Ranger Lead for Play who will be your volunteer manager. They will direct you as to what tasks need doing as a priority within the Park Play Areas. They will ensure that you have the tools, knowledge, and training to undertake the task. Every Park has a Ranger Lead who will offer further support when you need it.

  • Help to ensure the UGN Park Play Areas are safe and litter free

We want our Park Play Areas to be safe and accessible, this means that litter picking and removing other things that are harmful like broken glass is a regular part of the work of an UGN Play Area Volunteer.

  • Help others to enjoy the UGN Park Play Areas

We want everyone to enjoy our Park Play Areas, and part of this role is to be a friendly face for the general public, answering questions that they might have and reporting this back to the UGN Ranger (Play).

  • Act as the eyes and ears within the UGN Park Play Areas

We are a small staff team, so we rely on our volunteers and community partners to help us keep on top of any issues within the Park Play Areas. Within this role we would expect you to report any issues that you see within the Park to the Ranger Lead for Play.

Who would this role suit?

As we said we are a small team, so a can-do attitude and sense of fun is vital in this volunteer role. We are looking for people who are:

  • Able to work independently in the Park Play Areas at their own pace. This role will often involve working without the direct supervision of a member of staff, so confidence to work on your own is essential.
  • Enthusiastic about working outdoors across the seasons.
  • Happy to be part of a team and learn new skills.
  • Interested in Play Areas, Horticulture and the Natural World.
