Roving Ranger

Roving Rangers meet us at our Heaton Park depot and go out for whole days of hands-on work. The role suits enthusiastic people who are able to commit to volunteering with us for at least a day a week.

What’s involved?

The Urban Green Roving Rangers work alongside our existing Rangers and Community Gardeners. Rather than being focused on one park, however, they report to our Heaton depot in the morning and travel to whichever of our parks or countryside sites need them the most.

By becoming a Roving Ranger you could:

  • Support our Ranger team with maintenance and conservation tasks

You will be working closely with our small team of Rangers on a variety of practical tasks to ensure that our parks and greenspaces are safe and welcoming places for everyone to visit. This could range from fixing fences to undertaking wildlife surveys. Each day could be different.

  • Help others to enjoy the Park

We want everyone to enjoy our parks, and part of this role is to be a friendly face for the general public, answering questions that they might have. You could also get involved in some of our Ranger-led activities and events.

  • Gain new skills and experience

Urban Green invests in our Roving Rangers. We will provide you with training in appropriate skills, including, for example, using strimmers or tree ID. You’ll also obtain a wealth of knowledge via hands-on work alongside our expert staff.

Who would this role suit?

We are looking for people who are:

  • Able to work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Enthusiastic about horticulture and the natural world.
  • Able to work outdoors across the seasons.
  • Able to learn new skills and take the initiative.
  • Over the age of 18

Able to commit to volunteering for at least one day (9- 3) each week.
