Most of our volunteer opportunities take place at our new facility located at 1149 New Mill Drive.

Shelter Cleaning and Maintenance Volunteer
Objective: Provide a professional, hygienic environment for CHS animals to reside in and potential adopters to visit
Tier Level: Tier 1
Responsibilities:
Sweep and mop shelter floors.
Clean bathrooms and ensure they have paper towels and toilet paper.
Clean windows and doors .
Wash and put away laundry.
Organize and put away donations.
General maintenance, as needed.

Dog Care Team Volunteer
Objective:
Provide a hygienic environment for CHS dogs to reside in and for potential adopters to visit
Document animal’s poor eating and/or litter box habits, as well as behavioral changes for staff
Responsibilities:
Assist staff in cleaning dog enclosures
Feed dogs according to instructions
Bathing and grooming of dogs, as needed
Restock any supplies that are low at the end of the shift

Cat Care Team Volunteer
Objective:

Dog Enrichment Team Volunteer
Objective: To provide dogs with enrichment throughout the day
Tier Level: Tier 2
Prerequisites: Volunteer must first complete 15 hours of Shelter Cleaning and Maintenance or Dog Care Team volunteer jobs
Responsibilities:
Make enrichment toys for dogs.
Bathe and groom dogs, as necessary.
Walk dogs.
Play with dogs in the play yard.
Assist staff with play groups.
Take photographs of dogs for marketing purposes.
Training:
All tier 1 training

Cat Enrichment Team Volunteer

Administrative Team Volunteer
Objective: Provide administrative staff support. This job requires proficiency with technology and shelter software.
Responsibilities
Assist with donor letters and bulk mail campaigns.
Copying, scanning, and attaching documents.
Assembling adoption folders, goody bags for adopters.
Organizing and putting away donations.
Qualifications
Comfortable with computers and software programs.
Attention to detail.
Professional behavior when dealing with adopters and crisis boarding clients.

Event Team Volunteer
Objective: Provide assistance at CHS fundraising and educational events
Tier Level: Tier 1 (or tier 2 if handling dogs at events)
Responsibilities:
Assist in preparations for fundraising events, including flier distribution, pre-event registration, packet assembly, etc.
Help with event day tasks, such as set-up, greeting attendees, answering questions, and event tear-down
Year-end fundraising opportunities
Pet Banks
Bring pets to outreach and third party events
Qualifications:
Friendliness, professionalism, and strong communication skills
Ability to work with a diverse group of people
Commitment to punctuality and attention to detail
Ability to work independently or as a team member and use good judgement

Commitment: This volunteer position can be filled by regular volunteers, groups, or short-term volunteers
Photography Team Volunteer
Objective: Provide photographs of shelter animals for social media, adoption marketing and events.
Tier Level: Level 2
Responsibilities
Take photographs of shelter animals.
Turn in photographs to the Development Manager (Development@chesapeakehumane.org).
Bring your own animal handler, if needed. This person must be a Tier 2 CHS volunteer.
Qualifications
Able to safely handle animals.
Own your own camera.
Have photography experience.
Training
All Tier 1 training
All animal enrichment training

Commitment

Transport
Objective: To transport animals, donations, and supplies between CHS’ two facilities.
Tier Level: Tier 1 (Tier 2 for animal transport)
Responsibilities:
Pick up animals, donations, and supplies and transport them to the other facility.

Objective: To provide small animals (rabbits, hamsters, birds, etc.) with enrichment throughout the day
Tier Level: Tier 2
Prerequisites: Volunteers must first complete 15 hours of Shelter Cleaning and Maintenance or Small Animal Care Team volunteer jobs.
Responsibilities:
Make enrichment toys for small animals.
Groom animals, as necessary.
Play with animals.
Take photographs of animals for marketing purposes.
Printing updated kennel cards once pictures have been uploaded
Make note of any health or behavioral issues and report to staff.
