General Interests

Nutrition

Deliver or pack meals across Cumberland and York counties with our Meals on Wheels program:

For decades, Southern Maine Agency on Aging has been providing nutritious and delicious home-delivered meals to homebound older adults in Cumberland and York counties.

Our program is more than just a meal; it is also a wellness check and friendly visit. Volunteers and staff are trained to make sure that clients are safe when they make their delivery. This brief check helps to provide peace of mind to our clients and their families.

Assist at one of our many monthly Community Cafe locations:

Community Cafés are available in communities throughout Cumberland and York counties and provide participants an opportunity to socialize with other attendees while enjoying a delicious and nutritious lunch. Some Community Cafés also offer entertainment (such as bingo, games, and musical acts) or educational opportunities (such as speakers and resource tables)

Make Meals on Wheels a family tradition, learn more from some of our lifelong volunteers here!

And you can join us...

...from the comfort of your own home, on your own schedule as a Phone Pal volunteer Phone Pals offer weekly companionship to isolated older adults though a simple phone call!  We have over 100 older adults looking for a Phone Pal match - join us today & make a difference!

Respite Care Companions

There are difficulties that come with being a full-time caregiver, but with a recent grant from the National Community Care Corps, SMAA’s Volunteer Respite Care Companion Program can help!

SMAA aims to match trained/screened volunteers with older adults who have difficulty living independently, and their family caregivers. In consistent, weekly visits, care recipients will enjoy connections with a new friend; caregivers will receive respite to improve their mental, emotional, physical, and financial health, and their ability continue supporting their loved ones at home!

During weekly visits, volunteers provide companionship and light, non-medical assistance to an older adult in their home.

Activities may include:

  • Engaging in friendly conversation
  • Reading together
  • Sharing hobbies or going for a walk
  • Light household tasks (sorting mail, making a snack, basic tech help)

These volunteer visits can help a caregiver recharge while knowing their loved one is in good hands!

Adult Day Program

Our Adult Day Programs are a home away from home for adults living with disabilities/dementia diagnosis. We now have locations set up in Biddeford, Portland, and Springvale! Join our volunteer team as a greeter, or an activity aide!

Every day is an adventure filled with singing, games, arts and crafts, exercise, cooking, baking, and heartwarming conversations. Share your creativity, talents, and smile with older adults living with memory impairments!

See what our volunteers have to say about the fantastic Adult Day Program here!

Medicare Counseling

The Medicare Program at SMAA helps beneficiaries navigate the world of healthcare! Our knowledgeable team of volunteers are SHIP certified (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) to meet with people one-on-one and provide unbiased support and guidance through the complicated web of plans and coverage. While this program serves Medicare beneficiaries year-round, a bulk of appointments take place during Medicare Open Enrollment Period, from October 15 - December 7.

Our 2025 Volunteer of the Year, Herb Jannick, talks here about his involvement in the Medicare SHIP program and the immense savings he's seen as a result of counseling sessions.
