Fill out the application:
- Click the orange “Fill in an application” button (upper right corner on desktop or in the "I would like to volunteer" section on mobile).
- Set up a username and password (keep these safe for future logins).
- If under 18, have a parent/guardian complete the Minor Child Consent Waiver section.
After you submit:
- You’ll receive an automatic confirmation email. If you don’t, check your spam/junk folder and mark it as safe.
- We’ll review your application and send you an email to schedule a meet-and-greet.
Age guidelines (under 18):
- 16–17 years old: Fill out the application yourself; no adult required to volunteer with you.
- 13–15 years old: Must volunteer with an adult. The adult completes their own application, and you’ll be added as their teammate.

Dog Walker (13–15-year olds with an adult, 16+ solo)

Open Shifts:
Sundays 12-2pm

Dog Walkers will provide support with ensuring our dogs get a potty break, exercise, and learn lifelong behavior skills.
Duties
- Support modifying dog behavior through repetition and positive reinforcement
- Provide dogs with exercise
- Utilizing a Weiss Walkie as a lead or harness
- Navigating dogs through public spaces
- Support modifying dog behavior through repetition and positive reinforcement
- Provide walks for dogs that need medical support such as physical therapy or potty breaks for dogs with Upper Respiratory Infection
- Understand how to read kennel profiles and signage
- Report any medical or behavioral changes that are not already noted on the animal’s kennel
Skills Needed
This is a physical position. Volunteers MUST possess strong dog handling skills and always be observant of their surroundings and dog body language. Volunteers must be able to bend, lift, crouch, walk and stand for extended periods of time. Volunteers must be comfortable utilizing only positive reinforcement to encourage wanted behavior. Volunteers must be comfortable with all sizes and all potential breeds of dogs. Volunteers must be comfortable applying WHS skills and techniques. Volunteers must be comfortable with preventing unwanted behaviors such as jumping and barrier reactivity. Volunteers must be comfortable modifying behaviors such as mouthing and pulling. Commitment/Age Requirement
Minimum of a 6-month commitment required. This volunteer position is for anyone 13 years and older. Volunteers aged 13-15 years old must volunteer with an adult. Volunteers who are 16 years and older can volunteer on their own.
Animal Care Volunteer - Dogs (13–15-year olds with an adult, 16+ solo)

Saturdays 8:30-10:30am
Animal Care Volunteers help with cleaning and sanitizing dog kennels/suites and deep cleaning empty kennels in preparation for another animal. ACVs will typically compete daily cleaning for an entire ward in either our adoption or lodging areas. ACVs will also assist with feeding dogs’ daily diets.
Duties
- Clean and effectively sanitize animal kennels.
- Set up kennels for use by another animal.
- Feed animals’ daily diet as instructed by shelter staff
- Restock and organize necessary supplies as needed.
Skills Needed
Volunteers must be detailed-oriented and committed to reducing the chances of disease transmission. This is a physical position and volunteers must be comfortable walking, bending, squatting, scrubbing and moving cleaning equipment from one area to another for the duration of the shift. Volunteers must have the ability to follow directions, read, write and effectively communicate with staff and other volunteers. Volunteers in this role will need to feel comfortable handling dogs and reading dog body language.

Community Events Volunteer (18 years old+)
Community Events Volunteer

We invite you (and your social, well-behaved pets*) to become a Community Events Volunteer, representing the Wisconsin Humane Society at local events, business fundraisers, and outreach programs. These community events, also called third-party fundraisers, are coordinated by an individual or business to raise money or awareness for the shelter.
By volunteering, you will play a vital role in connecting our mission to the public. You'll help spread smiles, raise awareness, and inspire support for animals and programs at WHS-- all while helping us strengthen relationships with the community.
What you'll do:
- Attend community events on behalf of WHS (think farmers markets, breweries, craft fairs, dog-days fundraisers, etc.)
- Represent WHS at company and employee-engagement fundraisers.
- Table events to share information on WHS programs, services, and impact.
Create positive, memorable experiences that encourage ongoing community support.

* Some events request animals to attend. If you have a friendly, well-socialized pet who loves meeting new people and is comfortable in public settings, they may be able to join you as a WHS Animal Ambassador!

Shelter Crew: Laundry, Donations, and Cleaning (13–15-year olds with an adult or 16+ solo)

As you can imagine, much goes on to keep our facility up and running! We could not do it without the help of our volunteers. In this position, you will be helping with laundry (washing, drying, and folding), preparing enrichment toys for our dogs, cleaning our kitchens, and taking out garbage. Volunteers can be 13 -15 years and older in this position with an adult. Volunteers 16 years and older may work alone.
This position includes light physical labor and is SUPER important to the functioning of our shelter!
Training: Shelter Crew Training session with volunteer coordinator.

Veterinary Services - Treatments (18 years old +)

Vet Service Volunteers assist the Veterinary Staff with the care, diet, and medical needs of the general population of cats and dogs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Report to the Veterinary Technician on duty and perform the tasks assigned. These duties include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in general medication and treatment of animals
- Preparing and distributing special feedings
- Performing medical treatments including eye drops, cleaning ears, and fluids
- It is generally a 2hr shift or until the treatments have been administered (workload varies by season)
*The weekly shift commitment is very important.
Training: The training for Vet Services- Treatments is extensive and will require attendance at both cat and dog handling trainings, and at least four weeks of hands-on training.

Veterinary Services - Surgical Pack Prep (13–15-year olds with an adult, 16+ solo)

This position assists the Veterinary Staff with preparing instruments for surgery. Individuals must have strong communication skills and be able to work independently.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Surgical instrument cleaning, putting together packs for sterilization and restocking certain items. (The Vet Team is Super FUN!)

Youth Programs Volunteer (13–17-year olds with an adult, 18+ solo)

Youth programs volunteer - Milwaukee, Ozaukee, and Racine Campuses
The Wisconsin Humane Society offers fun and engaging youth programs for kids ages 4-18. There are many opportunities to get involved in youth programs and the work we do every day to engage young people in our mission. Lead youth on tours, engage children in fun activities about animals, or help facilitate animal interactions during programs.
Volunteers work alongside staff to help lead activities, crafts and games during youth programs.
Programs and schedule:
• Kids’ Night Out: Every second Friday of each month, 5:00-7:30 p.m.
• Birthday Party Host: Select Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and/or 1:00-3:00 p.m.
• Girl Scouts Night: Every third Thursday of each month, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
• Field trips: Select Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
• Camps: One-day camps during winter and spring breaks and weeklong camps during the summer, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
• Volunteers set their own schedules based on their availability and program need
Qualifications and requirements:
• At least 18 years old (or 13-17 years old if volunteering with an adult)
• Experience working with youth is a plus
• Comfortable working independently
• Comfortable speaking in front of groups
• Demonstrates safe animal handling skills with positive reinforcement
• Willingness to be flexible
On-boarding process and training:
• In-person meet & greet with youth programs staff
• Dog walker training and/or cat handling training (depending on program)
• Background check
• Other trainings as assigned
Youth Leaders (13-17 without an adult)

- Spend some quality time teaching kids about animals and have fun in the process! In this position, volunteers assist staff with the implementation of children’s camps (ages 7-14) at the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus.
- Under the supervision of staff, volunteers help with activity and game preparation, snacks, crafts, set-up, clean-up, and administrative tasks. Camps take place during spring, summer, and winter breaks each year. Dates and times vary. Volunteers must be able to commit to an entire camp session (1-day or 3-day).
- Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to volunteer in this position. No parent or guardian is required to attend, but a waiver of liability is required for all volunteers under the age of 18. Previous experience working with children (i.e. babysitting) is preferred. Volunteers should be responsible, have a positive attitude, and excel working in a team environment. Volunteers must be able to secure their own transportation.
