Days/HOURS: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 09:00 - 13:00 (or part of these hours if you cannot do the whole day)   

 

The Durrell Charity shop is open to the public from 09:00 - 13:00 Tuesday - Friday but staff are in, and we welcome volunteer help, from 08:30 - 15:30. Volunteers can do any part of these hours and days (Hours can vary depending upon availability)  

 

DRESS CODE: Smart Casual – Volunteer ID to be worn at all times

 

SUMMARY OF ROLE

 To serve our customers and to operate the tills in our busy charity shop in Trinity.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES

 

  • To welcome all customers with a cheerful smile and deliver the best possible customer service
  • To take the money for the goods and at the end of the shift to reconcile the till with a member of the staff.
  • To operate the card payment machine (as with all areas we ask for volunteer help training is given)
  • Report any refunds or exchanges
  • Be aware of any potential shop lifters and report immediate concerns to management.
  • To reconcile the goods with the correct department on the till.
  • To be compliant  with Health and Safety Legislation at all times
  • To attend relevant training and volunteer meetings as required.

  • Smartly dressed person who has the ability to work as part of a team or on their own.

Volunteer van driver for Durrell Charity shop

DRIVER and delivery/pick up

 

FRONT OF HOUSE and Behind the Scenes 

This role involves driving the zoo van all over the island, dropping and picking up goods donated to the Durrell Charity Shop in. Volunteers can choose to help for a few hours a month or more.

Volunteer van drivers need to be over 21 and have a valid Jersey drivers licence. 

Hours can be flexible to suit. Please note this role wil linvolve some lifting and carrying of bought and donated goods. It can be physical at times and is rated between 3-5 out of a scale of 1-5 (1 least physical 5 the most) due to some furniture delivery.

  • To ensure correct manual handling procedure when lifting heavy goods.
  • To help price large and heavy items for sale.
  • To answer queries from customers and signpost to management if appropriate.
  • Keep the sorting area clean and tidy at all times
  • To keep the shop floor clean and tide at all times.
  • To report to management and hazards or risks to the general public immediately
  • Comply with Health & Safety legislation at all times.
  • To attend relevant training or volunteer meetings as required.

  • To use the correct procedure when opening donation bags prior to sorting.
  • Following the correct procedure, use pricing guns to attached price labels
  • Ensure clothes have correct size indicators on the hangers.
  • To prepare the good s ready for the shop merchandiser.
  • Dispose of goods (in the correct container/skip etc.)  which are soiled, damaged or not accepted by Durrell Wildlife Charity Shop
  • Keep the sorting area clean and tidy at all times
  • Comply with Health & Safety legislation at all times.

To investigate the cost of items, photograph and upload potential high value donated goods for sale via local internet selling pages like JT insight and Facebook selling pages. Also Ebay to help widen the pool of buyers willing to pay for seleceted goods.

Charity Shop

The Durrell Charity Shop is a wonderful initiative generating a vital income stream for Durrell.

Recycling, reducing and re-using is consistent with our drive for a more sustainable and eco friendly planet.

We are open to the public to grab a bargain 09:00 - 13:00 Tuesday - Saturday.

Volunteers can come in to help out from 08:00 - 14:30 on Mondays and from 08:00 - 15:00 Tuesday - Saturday. Some Volunteers come for a couple of hours some come and stay for the whole shift - we are flexible to suit you.

We welcome anyone in this area who is motivated and enthusiastic and enjoys working as part of a busy team.

If you also have experience in retail and/or customer services then the charity shop could provide an ideal volunteering opportunity for you. 

The role may include: organisation and dressing areas of the shop, pricing goods, serving the public, sorting through merchandise.

If you can drive and are willing, there is also opportunity to pick up and/or delivering goods to customers in our zoo van.

Volunteers come together to make a great team. They bring a wide range of knowledge and experience, but most importantly, a great sense of humour and team work ethic as they raise crucial funds for Durrell.

How physically demanding is this role?

This role is rated from 2-5 out of 5. Due to the nature of the different roles available in the charity shop we rate this role from Low, Medium to a High level of physical activity. Some of the roles in the charity shop require lower levels of physical activities such as sorting through soft toys, clothes, computer games, books and dvds but may require standing for long periods or sitting twisting and turning and so rated 2. Other roles can involve heavy lifting such as delivering donated furniture and moving heavy dontated goods and rated 5. Volunteers of course are able to choose what they are comfortable doing.
