Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia? Erskine Care Home in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, is looking for compassionate individuals with an interest in dementia to join our team as Volunteer Companions for our Dementia Café.

Erskine is committed to providing specialised care, and we are seeking volunteers to support our Dementia Café, creating a warm and supportive environment for both residents and their families.

Providing Practical Support - Clerical/admin

This can include reception, filing, data entry, handwritten correspondence, stuffing envelopes, general inventory sorting, photocopying, scanning, archiving & general office support.

Providing Practical Support - Assisting with Fundraising and Events

This could entail

  • Can and bucket collections
  • Sourcing venues for Erskine collection cans
  • Event marshalling
  • Hosting registration and merchandise stalls at events
  • Selling raffle tickets
  • Participating in challenge events and supporting other challenge event participants
  • Supporting the practical preparation, set up and dismantling of equipment, stalls and displays at Erskine events such as the Erskine Bikers Meet, Military Ball and Partnership Events
  • Hosting events to raise money for Erskine

Providing Care Support - Working directly with our residents in the care setting

This can entail visiting and befriending, support for residents' participation with activities, assisting at mealtimes, assisting our allied health departments with resident programmes e.g. speech and language or physiotherapy supports.

Providing Practical Support - Driving

This can involve driving Erskine transport caddies and minibuses to porter residents, volunteers, ERMAC members or Erskine tenants to and from appointments and events

Providing Practical Support - Gardening

Assisting to maintain the gardens and grounds around the Erskine homes and activity venues and/or supporting residents or members will allotments

Teaching and Tutoring

This involves taking classes, groupwork or 1-1's for our veteran activity centre members, based on your skills, qualifications or hobbies experience in response to veterans needs e.g. PT gym sessions, archery, geneaology, woodwork, metalwork, hobbycrafts, languages, computing, yoga etc.

Providing Practical Support - Community based marketing

This could entail helping with volunteer recruitment and generally increasing awareness of the Erskine Veterans Charity in the community, poster and leaflet drops to community venues and neighbourhoods, hosting information stalls at community events, presentations to community groups etc.

The Erskine Edinburgh Home (EEH)

Erskine Edinburgh Care Home opened in 2002 and is situated in Gilmerton in the heart of the local community. The purpose built home provides 24 hour care for 40 residents with nursing needs and for people living with dementia.

A wide range of services and activities are available to all residents. Residents are free to participate in all activities that interest them and support their physical, mental and social wellbeing. There are relaxing landscaped gardens, with all weather activities area.  The home is near public transport and local shops

We have a large communal activity area for concerts etc (The Robertson Trust Room), a daily social activities programme with Activity Co-ordinator and our own minibus for day trips and outings. Example activities are arts and crafts, exercise and movement-based classes, themed events, religious observance events, befriending, reminiscence groups and therapets.

The Erskine Home (EH)

Erskine Home in Bishopton opened in 2000, and is situated in picturesque grounds by the Erskine Bridge. This purpose built home, provides nursing and dementia care, both long term and respite, for 180 residents on a 24 hour basis.

The wide range of services provided are complemented by the popular Royal Scots Shop, Harry’s Cafe and nearby Garden Centre and Coffee shop.
