Volunteer Opportunity Categories
Classroom or Camp Volunteer

Support teachers and students in our afterschool STEM program.
Summer Camp dates, sites, and hours vary, but requirements are the same.
Who: 18+
Commitment: Minimum of 1 hour, 1 afternoon per week for 27 weeks Sept - May
Hours: 1-3 hours between 1pm-5:30pm (school depending)
Days: 1 afternoon Monday-Friday
Where: Elementary schools in Richmond and Oakland
Required clearances:
1) Fingerprinting (livescan)
2) Proof of negative TB Test
3) CA mandated reporter training
Responsibilities:
- Support the teacher in delivering project-based, in-person STEM lessons.
- Assist with activity set-up and clean-up.
- Build relationships with students, focusing on socio-emotional development and individual strengths
- For select schools, Spanish is a plus, but not mandatory.
Role Model

Role models show young girls they belong in STEM.
Who: Female identifying STEM and trade professionals/grad students
What: Spend an afternoon with our elementary school girls to share a bit about yourself, your STEM path, and your work.
When: 2.5-4 hours, one weekday afternoon
Where: school sites in Richmond, Oakland, Emeryville, or Berkeley
Commitment: at least 1 afternoon
By visiting a class, in person, you:
- help them connect what they’re learning in their 27 week program to real world jobs
- get them more excited about STEM
- give the girls a chance to meet the amazing women in the Bay Area
- help them see themselves in a STEM career and inspire them to learn more
What does an afternoon as a role model look like?
Meet with two (three on Weds) classes for 1 hour each afterschool at a school site in the Oakland or Richmond area. For each class:
- Provide a brief introduction of your role/career, and optional show-and-tell with any appropriate items from your work (5-7 min)
- Hold a Q&A session with students (3-5 min)
- Assist with a preplanned STEM project with the girls (45 min).
- Keep in mind the lesson for the day does NOT need to correlate with your area of expertise.
Teen Volunteers

Near Peer - Applications NOW OPEN
Who: High school girls and gender-expansive youth (15+)
What: Build leadership by assisting teachers with STEM lessons in an afterschool classroom of 15-20 elementary school girls.
Where: Elementary schools in Richmond, Oakland, & Berkeley area
When: 1 hour, 1 weekday afternoon for school year or session
Commitment: 27- week school year or 7-10 weeks curriculum session.
Notes:
- Choose between receiving a stipend or volunteer hours
- Additional clearance requirements such as proof of negative TB test, fingerprinting, and reference letter may be required for certain school sites.
Family STEM Events Volunteer
Who: Individuals 14+ (12-14 with adult)
What: Lead a STEAM project station with a teacher at SAfG’s Family STEAM Events held throughout the year, engaging children and their families in hands-on projects. Training on the activity provided.
Where: Elementary school and partner sites around the East Bay.
When: 2-6 hour shifts select weekday evenings and Saturdays
Commitment: 1 shift
Seasonal Library Volunteer
Who: Individuals 15+
What: Engage students and families in a STEM project under the supervision of a teacher at a public library.
Where: Library sites around the East Bay.
When: 2 hour shifts select weekday afternoons and Saturdays
Commitment: 1 shift
Teen Summer Camp Volunteer
Who: Teens 15-17 years old (18+ apply for adult position)
What: Engage elementary age students in a rotation of 1 hour STEM projects under the supervision of a teacher.
Where: school or community sites in Richmond, Oakland or Emeryville
When: Varies. 2-8 hour shifts weekdays.
Commitment: Varies - either week by week or single week day for 4-8 weeks.
Corporate, Group, or Team Volunteering

STEM Lesson kitting
Sponsor and/or assemble materials for lessons or take home STEM kits in a team-building event that makes a direct local community impact. Learn more HERE.

Host an activity table at, send general volunteers to, or help sponsor one or more of our Family STEM Engagement Series events.
Role Models
Send female identifying staff to the afterschool classroom to encourage young girls into STEM careers. Learn more HERE.

Family STEM Engagement Volunteers

When: 2 - 6 hour shifts select weekday evenings and Saturdays
Commitment: 2 hour shift
