How Can You Get Involved?

Greeters: Help create a welcoming and organized environment for clients, ensuring their experience is smooth and efficient.

Intake Specialists: Help clients to fill out intake forms, while gathering the appropriate tax documents from clients. 

Tax Preparers: Receive training and certification to assist clients with tax preparation. No prior experience is required, and training is provided.

Site Coordinators: Oversee the tax site to ensure a smooth operation while also ensuring compliance with all IRS and VITA program guidelines.

Greeter

Key Responsibilities:​

  • Warm Welcome: Greet clients with a friendly smile and make them feel comfortable and valued as soon as they enter the VITA center.​
  • Appointment Coordination: Help clients check in for their appointments and guide them to the appropriate tax preparer.​
  • Provide Information: Offer basic information about the VITA program, its services, and eligibility criteria to clients who may have questions.​
  • Queue Management: Maintain an organized waiting area to ensure clients are seen in a timely and efficient manner.​

Intake Specialist

Key Responsibilities:​

  • Client Registration: Welcome clients to the VITA center and assist them with the initial intake process.​
  • Intake Forms: Ensure clients complete all required forms accurately. Ensure all questions have an answer and signatures have been obtained.​
  • Verification of Identification: Verify clients' identities and confirm that they meet the eligibility criteria for VITA services.​
  • Scope of Service: Ensure tax return is within scope of VITA​
  • Proper Documentation: Ensure client has all proper tax documents needed to prepare the return.

Tax Preparer

Key Responsibilities:​

  • Tax Preparation: Prepare and complete accurate federal and state tax returns for eligible clients using IRS-approved tax preparation software.​
  • Client Education: Explain tax-related concepts, such as credits, deductions, and tax liabilities, in a clear and understandable manner.​
  • Timely Filing: Ensure that all tax returns are filed within the designated deadlines and meet any state-specific requirements.​
  • Resource Referral: Provide information about additional financial resources, such as free financial counseling or savings programs, to help clients improve their financial well-being.​

Quality Reviewer

Key Responsibilities:​

  • Feedback and Coaching: Provide constructive feedback and guidance to volunteer tax preparers to help them improve their tax preparation skills.​
  • Review Tax Returns: Thoroughly review completed tax returns prepared by volunteer tax preparers to ensure accuracy and compliance with tax laws and regulations.​
  • Error Identification: Identify and correct any errors, discrepancies, or omissions in the tax returns, including calculations, data entry, and documentation.​
  • Taxpayer Interviews: Conduct interviews with clients to verify information and clarify any potential issues or inconsistencies.​

Site Coordinator

  • Overall Site Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the VITA center, ensuring its smooth functioning during tax season.​
  • Client Engagement: Ensure a welcoming and efficient environment for clients, managing the flow of clients and volunteers.​
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and enforce quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of tax returns.​
  • Technical Support: Address technical issues related to tax preparation software, computers, and other equipment used at the VITA center.
