A Big Thank You to the 'Dig Up the Cannas' Volunteers.

These volunteers dug up 100s cannas at the Yanney Park Gardens this past Saturday.  One more fall maintenance item was completed by the volunteers digging cannas, removing annual flowers, dividing the canna rhizomes, and placing them in the planting beds to be picked up by staff.  Many volunteers took home some extra cannas rhizomes and sweet potato tubers to add to their gardens.

The Gardens would not be as beautiful without all the volunteer hours put in.

Thanks again for all your hard work!!!!

Formal Garden Beds are Planted!!!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who came to help us plant the Formal Gardens at Harmon Park. We greatly appreciate your help! Mulch will be put down very soon.

Thank YOU to everyone who made the 2023 Big Dig Event a GREAT Success!

Many energetic volunteers worked at the BIG DIG in May.   The flowers are growing beautifully.

Please join us on Tuesday, October 3rd to plant daffodil, crocus, and allium bulbs at the Formal Fountain Gardens! We will begin at 8:30 AM and go until 10:30 AM. Please bring your trowels or any tools you like to use to plant bulbs.

The mulching event for the Formal Fountain at Harmon Park on Friday, October 6th has been canceled due to the cold temperatures in the morning.

Digging Up Canna Bulbs Event

Saturday, October 21st from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM we plan on having a volunteer event to help us dig and clean up canna bulbs. This will involve cutting the foliage off, popping the bulbs out of the ground, and placing them in containers for storage. This will be dependent on if we get a frost before that date. If not, we will schedule it at a later date. The KPR staff will take the cannas they need for next year and the rest can be picked out and taken home by whoever volunteered that day.

Becoming A Volunteer

How to Become a Volunteer

There are two types of volunteers - Seasonal and event volunteers. Seasonal volunteers can signup for events and other volunteer opportunities like weekly horticultural activities and educational programs.  Whereas, Event volunteers can only sign up for events like Spring Clean-up, The Big Dig, Heritage Days, and Greenhouse Events.

There are two steps to becoming a volunteer:

A. You apply to be a volunteer.

The volunteer application only needs to be filled out once as long as the individual volunteers once a year.

Seasonal volunteers have to complete a more in-depth application which includes a liability waiver, a background check, and volunteer orientation.  The seasonal volunteer process allows the individual to sign up for both events and other garden opportunities. Click on this Seasonal Volunteer Application link (1) to apply to be a seasonal volunteer.

The event volunteer application is short and requires volunteers to sign a liability waiver. Click on the Event Volunteer Application (2)  link and then click on the link in the top right corner of that page.  The next volunteer event will be held in the fall when the Gardens are cleaned up for winter.

B. Sign up for event volunteer activities from your Volunteer Page after applying to be a volunteer.

Seasonal Volunteers opportunities will be opened to volunteers after they complete orientation and passed their background check

  1. Click on the Opportunities tab and select the opportunity list.
  2. Look through the volunteer opportunities offered and click on the icon next to the position title for more information.
  3. Click on the volunteer opportunity title that interests you.
  4. Don’t forget to push sign-up button under the action heading at the bottom of the page.
  5. You can find more information about the event position you volunteered for by clicking on the Schedule tab of your volunteer page and clicking the orange information icon next to the activity title.

Contact me if you have any questions about applying to be a volunteer or signing up.
