Program Support - Novel Dog

Your pet dog can help, too! We use volunteer dogs regularly to help with training our dogs around unknown ("novel") dogs and assessing our dogs during client public access tests and similar evaluations.

  • Volunteer dog owner handles their own dog and will typically be asked to walk their dog past our dogs several times at a set distance. Exact instructions will vary by situation and it is important for volunteers to wait for instructions before bringing their dog up to our dogs.
  • We can use help from all manner of pet dog owners but are most interested in dogs that aren't regular playmates of our dogs in training and particularly in dogs that are different breeds from our dogs.
  • Reactive or “untrained” dogs are actually very helpful but do let us know what to expect!
  • Novel dog shifts happen at EENP and also in the community at locations like Home Depot or Southpoint Mall (outside).
  • Shifts are short -- typically 15-30 minutes.
  • We have some Saturday slots but most slots are on weekdays during the work day.
