Child Youth and Family Programs

The YMCA is a place where you can be yourself, meet new friends and have fun. Our Health and Fitness Centres support members as they strive to reach their potential and work toward their personal goals. Our drop-in programs for children, youth and families provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive space to build a foundation for physical fitness that will last a lifetime by helping kids get active and have fun. Volunteers in child, youth and family programs partner with staff to ensure smooth delivery of children’s instructional, drop-in programs and Teen Night.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible hours with minimum commitment of three months

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 13.
  • Volunteers 18 years of age or older will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Knowledge and experience of recreational sports.
  • First Aid/CPR an asset.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Team player and able to take initiative.

Aquatics

Our flexible, customized approach to aquatics means that there’s something for everyone, from those learning to take their first strokes to hard-core water fitness enthusiasts. YMCA swim lessons help children get active in a fun, safe setting. Children learn about water safety and build fundamental swim skills with support and guidance from our expert swim instructors. Aquatics volunteers support staff in providing members registered in swim program healthy opportunities to learn and improve their swim skills.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum one day a week for at least two hours for six months.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 18 for adult programs and 13 for children’s programs
  • Volunteers 18 years of age or older will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Previous participation or experience in the YMCA Learn to Swim program preferred.
  • Bronze Medallion and or Bronze Cross Certification preferred.
  • YMCA Assistant Swim Instructor Course Certification preferred.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR – B Training preferred.
  • Strong swimming skills required with high comfort level in a pool environment.

Facilities

Our Health and Fitness Centres support members as they strive to reach their potential and work toward their goals as part of an inclusive, caring and healthy community. Our fitness centres feature modern equipment and amenities to make your workout as convenient and comfortable as possible. Facilities volunteer partner with staff as housekeepers and laundry assistants to maintain smooth flow of services and upkeep of the centre.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible schedule with minimum commitment of three months

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 13.
  • Volunteers 18 years of age or older will need to provide a Police Reference Check from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR certification an asset.

Group Fitness Leaders

YMCA group fitness classes are big, friendly workout parties that make exercise fun and inspiring. Certified instructors guide members through moves crafted to help tackle their fitness goals in record time. With upbeat playlists, fun-loving classmates, and motivating teachers, our group fitness classes will get you excited to hit the gym.

Time Commitment:

  • One hour per week for a minimum of one year. Teach a class at a fixed regular time, and/or be able to substitute for a class when possible.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 16.
  • Volunteers age 18 and above will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Current YMCA Group Fitness Certification (or equivalent) with the designation in the stream the leader will be instructing which includes Choreography-based classes, Yoga, Pilates, Muscle Conditioning, Cycle, etc.
  • Current First Aid and CPR A recommended.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Team player who demonstrates initiative.
  • Commitment to YMCA Mission, Vision and Values.

Membership Services

At the YMCA, we're more than a gym. We're a place where you can be yourself, meet new friends and have fun. At our Health and Fitness Centres we support our members as they strive to reach their potential and work toward their goals as part of an inclusive, caring and healthy community. Volunteers in this role assist YMCA Membership Services staff.

Some major duties may include:

  • Providing information on all programs, services and facility.
  • Meeting and greeting members as they arrive and leave.
  • Conducting tours/member experiences.
  • General customer service.
  • Answering incoming calls.
  • Representing the YMCA in a responsible and professional manner.
  • Being positive, helpful and welcoming at all times.
  • Building relationships with members and introduce them to other members, staff and volunteers.
  • Delivering YMCA service responsibly, honestly, respectfully and with care.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum of at least six months; one hour per week, flexible

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 13.
  • Volunteers 18 and above will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Friendly and welcoming.
  • Willingness to meet and greet new and potential members.
