Activity and Social Engagement volunteers typically assist in long-term care and assisted living homes. Volunteers join in on fun group activities and outings, chat with residents, and offer friendly one-to-one visits.

Activity volunteers assist in group activities and events.

Social Engagement volunteers focus on casual conversations and building connections with residents.

Acute Care Support volunteers are a comforting presence throughout the Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek & District Hospitals, offering warmth, kindness, and companionship to residents in Long-Term Care or the Inpatient Unit, or patients waiting for long hours in the Emergency Room. 

Your presence can ease anxiety, lift spirits, and bring comfort when it’s needed most.

Available only in Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson. Emergency Room duties are only at the Fort Nelson location.

Entertainers and Performers offer live music, singing, dancing or other activities that bring joy and delight to clients.

Do you sing, play and instrument, or perform? We would be thrilled to host your performance at one of our care facilities! Come volunteer to share your talents with residents, their families, and friends.

Visit once in a while to bring a burst of sunshine, or come regularly and give residents a special treat to look forward to.

We are actively recruiting for this role across many locations - especially at Mountainview Lodge in Kitimat. 

Gardening Support volunteers help residents connect with nature, nurture wellness, and enjoy meaningful moments through hands-on gardening activities. From planting seeds to harvesting fresh produce, volunteers contribute to a vibrant and therapeutic environment that boosts nutrition, sparks joy, and enriches lives.

Volunteers should have:

• Basic garden knowledge
• Physical ability to assist with in-ground and raised bed gardens
• An interest in growing fruit and vegetables

Previous gardening experience is preferred.

Parkside Care

Growth Monitor volunteers brighten clinic visits - one child, one family at a time!

Welcome families with newborns to the Medical Clinic and support them through their visit. Assist them to check in, move throughout the Clinic, and measure their babies according to guidelines; hand out pamphlets and resources.

Available only in Fort St. John.

Hairstylist volunteers improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of residents in long term care by providing a much appreciated and practical service.

This is a rewarding position as it provides a practical and much needed service which is a highlight for clients.

Must be trained/certified as a hairstylist/barber (must provide a copy of Journeyperson certification or historical certificate – expired certificates are acceptable).

Available only in Prince Rupert.

Hemodialysis Unit Support volunteers enhance the quality of experience for clients by providing support and non-clinical assistance to clients of the hemodialysis unit.

Volunteers should have:

• A calm, friendly demeanor with good listening skills
• The ability to initiate and hold conversations with clients from all backgrounds
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Nutrition knowledge is an asset

Available only at the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George.  This program currently has a waitlist.

Meals on Wheels Delivery volunteers deliver nutritious meals prepared by NH facilities to the clients' homes. This supports the health and independence of vulnerable adults and seniors in our communities.

Volunteer Drivers for this program must have their own vehicle.

Available only in Terrace. 

Mealtime Assistance volunteers bring warmth and connection to every meal—your presence nourishes more than just the body. Step in and make mealtimes moments of joy and dignity. 

Volunteers help with opening containers, distributing clothing protectors, chatting, and cuing the resident during the meal.

Fort St. John, at Peace Villa (at Peace Villa, these duties are part of the Social Engagement role). 

Menu Selection Support volunteers provide friendly assistance to ensure clients can download and navigate the hospital CBORD patient menu app and make meal selections that meet clients' specific dietary needs and preferences. Training on the patient menu selection app is provided. 

Experience using a wide variety of technology is preferred.

Only available at the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George. 

Newborn Cuddler volunteers provide support to the hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This position aligns with the provincial Eat, Sleep, Console program.

Volunteers should have:

• Suitability and experience with newborns (especially NICU babies)
• Listed availability that matches the scheduling needs of the program
• An understanding of the provincial Eat, Sleep, Console program
• An understanding of cultural safety
• A minimum age of 18 years old 
• Preference may be given to those enrolled in a related post-secondary health care program

There is a waitlist for this popular program. We encourage all applicants to consider volunteering within another service area while they wait, as we first reach out to existing, active volunteers on the Newborn Cuddler waitlist.

Therapy Dog Team volunteers bring smiles, comfort, and connection to clients all across Northern Health. These specially trained and screened therapy dog teams help brighten lives by reducing stress and anxiety, sparking joyful memories, and supporting emotional and physical well-being. 

Requirements:

• Volunteers must provide their own certified therapy dog
• Therapy dog certification must be provided by a recognized therapy dog program
• Proof of dog vaccination required

We are recruiting certified therapy dog teams in all locations.

Wayfinding and Information Desk volunteers welcome the public and help guide clients and visitors by providing directions and helping them find their appointment locations.

Volunteers should have:

• A calm, friendly demeanor with good listening skills.
• The ability to engage with clients in general conversation to create a positive experience.
• Willingness to work with clients of diverse backgrounds.
