Location: In person at selected Portland Public Schools, cultural centers like PIAFC, Africa House, IRCO Main Office and parents’ homes.

Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays; 2-hour shifts varying within evening window of 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Time Commitment: Volunteers should be able to commit to tutoring once or twice weekly throughout the school year.
Program Description:
IRCO’s RESJ-FACES youth and academic services program amongst others, support whole family learning activities though in-home tutoring, small group tutoring with a focus on individualized learning goals and instruction, native language literacy, math, STEM activities and literacy supports (via story times, storytelling). the communities we serve are on track with math and literacy levels and ideally improve upon their MAP and OSAS scores. Also, that, through this program, students and families have a safe space within the school system and improve attendance rate, sense of belonging, positive culturally identity, student retention and parents' involvement in their children's school and academic growth.
Position Summary:
The RESJ FACES program seeks dedicated, responsible, and culturally mindful volunteers to support K through 5th grade students from various cultural backgrounds by providing in home tutoring in math and/or literacy and assist with academic enrichment activities, such as fieldtrips and workshops. Volunteers should have a passion for working with multi-lingual and multicultural students.
A good fit for this opportunity is someone with deep familiarity in fun ways of tutoring math and reading in elementary schools.
Qualifications
Preferred:
- Interest in participating in group activities that support family connection, cultural identity, wellness and wellbeing and cultural sharing within the larger school community
- Experience in tutoring elementary school students is preferred but not required.
- Fluency in the following languages preferred but not required: Vietnamese, Somali, Tongan or Russian language ability helpful
Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older
- Must pass background check
- Reliable transportation to and from site
- Comfortable providing math and literacy support to children in grades K-5th
- Ability to build good relationships with students and parents to pursue the students' academic goals
- Commitment to working with non-native English speakers and community members from various backgrounds
