Volunteer Role/Title: Math & Science Tutor – Upward Bound 

Program Area/Name: Upward Bound 

Location: David Douglas High School (North Building), Room 159 (outdoor portable with access ramp). 1001 SE 135th Ave, Portland, OR 97233 

Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday 
2:30-4:00 pm 
1 day per week and/or as a floater to fill in for other volunteer absences 

We ask each volunteer to commit to one shift/day per week, ideally for the entire academic year (Oct-early June), but we would be open to a semester (Oct-Feb or Feb-Jun) for the right candidate. 

Program Description: Upward Bound is a college access program that serves first-generation and low-income students with academic need who intend to enroll in post-secondary education directly out of 
high school. Students who are enrolled commit for all 4 years of high school and receive services that include tutoring, academic advising, workshops, a 6-week summer program, field trips, and support with the college/scholarship application process. 

Position Details: Provide homework help and academic tutoring in math and science subjects, including Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics, up through lower college levels. Sciences include but are not limited to: General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. 
Additional assistance in other academic subjects (Social Studies, Language Arts, etc.) and supporting students in the program goals of academic success, goal setting, career exploration, and reaching postsecondary education. Potential support may be needed on field trips, during the summer program, or during workshops. 

Volunteer Experience & Impact: Tutors in Upward Bound can help individual students meet their academic potential, overcome obstacles, and build confidence in their abilities. Because of the commitment of staff, students, and volunteers, the program has a real community and genuine connections. All efforts help students meet their goals of attending college and feeling prepared when they arrive.
