Position Title: SUN Support Staff - Volunteer 

Program Area: Walt Morey SUN Schools Program - Afterschool program 

Locations: In-person at Walt Morey Middle School Cafeteria, 2801 SW Lucas Ave, Troutdale, OR 97060 

Schedule: 3:00 pm - 5:15 pm each day (January 12th - March 12th) 

Time Commitment: two-month commitment from January 12th through March 12th. Volunteers who are willing to continue participating can continue to spring term (April 6th - June 4th). 

Program Description: IRCO’s School-Based Programs support youth and families through site-specific services based out of our 21 SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Schools across Multnomah County. Walt Morey Middle School is a part of the SUN Schools Program. 

The goal of SUN community schools is to bridge the gap between communities and their schools through collaboration focused on providing academic enrichment, recreational activities, and other essential resources to students and families.  

Position Details: 
Volunteer staff will meet students in the cafeteria as soon as school is over. Once in the cafeteria, students will grab a meal, eat, and socialize for about 20 minutes. During this time, volunteers will monitor student behavior, spark conversation with students to create a positive communal atmosphere and, help facilitate transitions. 
 
To begin activities, students will break out into separate activity groups. Volunteers will split into different groups to help our activity leaders keep students engaged. 
 
Our winter activities are: Art Journaling, Pokémon, Dungeons & Dragons, Theater, Minecraft, Board Games, and Study Hall/Homework Help. 

Volunteers will help our afterschool program tremendously by increasing the number of students we are able to enroll at a time!

  • Monitor student behavior and activities
  • Engage with students in a friendly manner
  • Create a positive communal environment
  • Facilitate transitions from student mingling to structured activities 

Qualifications, Skills, Experience:  

Volunteers will bring positive energy to encourage students to participate meaningfully in their after-school activities. Ideally, volunteers will be outgoing, good with kids, able to gently but effectively discourage unwanted behaviors, and able to work well with other staff members.  

Volunteers who have specific skills or passions to share with students would be a plus. i.e. art, photography, sports, etc. 

Preferred skills: 

  • Able to problem solve with or without supervisor input
  • Outgoing and friendly communication 

Requirements:  

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Reliable transportation to and from site
  • Must pass background check
  • Complete Role Specific Training & Onboarding into the volunteer program
  • Open to working with community members from various backgrounds
  • Able to work in a loud and distracting environment; able to maintain composure in stressful situations
  • Comfortable working with middle school aged children
  • Good time management
