SCHOOL BASED YOUTH PROGRAMS - Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Classroom Assistant

Position Title: Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Classroom Assistant 

Program Area: Oregon Battle of the Books 

Locations: In-person at Vestal Elementary School PPS, 161 NE 82nd Ave Portland, OR 97220 

Schedule: 2:15-5:00 pm, every Tuesday (January 20th to March 10th) 

*No class on January 27th 

Time Commitment: Commitment from January through March. Volunteers wanting to continue can move to Spring term.  

Program Description:  

Vestal Elementary School will host two Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) after school classes. 
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. 
 
OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students. 
 
OBOB is run primarily by volunteers through the Oregon Association of School Libraries (OASL) and funded partially through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). OASL and OBOB operating under its umbrella, are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-oppression in our organization, policies, and practices. 

Position Details:  

Volunteers will work alongside a lead teacher to facilitate literacy activities, supervise students, and foster teamwork and reading engagement—directly contributing to students’ reading comprehension, confidence, and love of learning in an inclusive, supportive environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the lead teacher with lesson delivery, activities, and curriculum implementation 

  • Help supervise and manage students in a structured, supportive learning environment 

  • Encourage student engagement, reading comprehension, teamwork, and collaboration 

 

Qualifications, Skills, Experience:  

Preferred: 

  • Interest in literacy, reading motivation, or youth education 

 

Requirements:  

  • Must be 18 or older 

  • Reliable transportation to and from site 

  • Must pass Portland Public School background check 

  • Complete Role Specific Training & Onboarding into the volunteer program 

  • Comfortable working with elementary-aged students 

  • Reliable, patient, and adaptable in a classroom setting 

  • Uphold OBOB and OASL values of equity, inclusion, and respect for diverse perspectives/backgrounds
