The Volunteer Tax Support Program is currently in the offseason. We are recruiting volunteers for the January–April 2027 tax season, when in-person clinics will resume. Volunteer training and certification materials will be available in Nov/Dec 2026. Volunteers who sign up now may get a head start on training and receive updates as the upcoming tax season approaches. 

Program Description: IRCO’s Tax Support Program, in partnership with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, provides free, high-quality tax assistance to eligible taxpayers in the Portland Metro area. Clients include low- to moderate-income individuals and families, people with disabilities, seniors, and immigrant and refugee community members. This program ensures accurate tax preparation, maximized credits and refunds, and improved financial stability through accessible, culturally specific support. 

By offering free tax preparation services in multiple languages and locations, IRCO reduces financial barriers to professional tax assistance. Volunteers play a vital role in providing direct client support, receiving training and certification to serve as intake specialists or tax preparers. 

Position Summary: Intake Specialist 

Intake Specialists greet community members as they arrive for appointments at IRCO’s tax clinics, creating a welcoming atmosphere. This is the first point of contact for a tax appointment, where volunteers will conduct intake interviews, support taxpayers in completing intake forms, screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance needed, and confirm clients have the necessary documents to file their tax returns. 

Some of the languages our clients speak include Vietnamese, Russian, and Spanish, so language skills are a plus! However, interpretation services will be provided when needed. Tax law certification is not required for this position, but volunteers must certify in the open-book Volunteer Standards of Conduct exam and the Intake/Interview & Quality Review Exam. IRCO will provide training resources/courses for certification.
