Trails Maintenance Volunteer

MARS has a contract with regional parks that brings significant income to our organization. The team is responsible for maintaining 6km of trails, all of which are located in Merville, most along or near the Tsolum River.
What does a trails maintenance volunteer do?
During the growing season, we mow the grass along trails, use weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, loppers and hand clippers. We remove fallen or potentially dangerous trees but leave the chainsaw work to park staff. We keep the culverts clear and water flowing, especially during the rainy season. Tools provided.
Am I suited to this volunteer job?
This position is ideal for people who like to be physically active, like to work outdoors, and are available Monday mornings. Because we work in teams of two, this position suits those who would like to work with a buddy.
What is the commitment?
We meet every Monday morning at 9am in the spring and summer, 10am in the fall and winter. About a 2-3 hour weekly commitment.
Requirements:
- At least 16 years of age and able to work without direct supervision
- Able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of two 6 hour shifts per month
- MARS membership -- annual membership fee $10 for seniors/students, $15 for individuals, and $25 for families
