Purpose: Through this position, you will help Sacramento Public Library support our diverse communities’ aspirations to learn, connect, and grow. Volunteers in this position will assist job seekers by providing feedback on resumes and cover letters and practicing successful job interview skills. The
goal of this position is to support community members in growing their professional experience and obtaining secure and fulfilling employment opportunities.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities:
- Job Coach volunteers perform tasks designed to help job seekers make good first impressions with hiring organizations. These tasks include:
- Helping job seekers write impactful resumes and cover letters.
- Conducting practice interviews.
- Instructing on how to communicate professionally with hiring organizations.
Volunteer Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have had consistent professional experience for at least
the last 3 years. - Must have reliable access to a computer and internet connection if they will be meeting with
patrons virtually. - Ability to maintain job seekers confidentiality.
- English language comprehension with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- An understanding of professional communication techniques.
- Ability to work patiently and compassionately with job seekers and meet them where their ability level is.
- High digital literacy skills and familiarity with MS Office Suite and Google Docs.
- Competency in using Zoom and ability and comfort in using a webcam so as to be visible to job seeker if meeting with patrons virtually.
Desired Skills:
- Proficiency in a language other than English.
- Employment history in Human Resources or a related field.
- Ability to create social scripts for job seekers learning to communicate professionally.
Skill Development/Position Benefits:

Time Commitment & Scheduling: Job Coach volunteers need to be punctual and have consistent attendance. They will meet with job seekers at scheduled times and communicate these times with the library’s Volunteer Coordinator. We ask that Job Coaches commit to two hours a week for a six-month period. They will need to be able to meet job seekers during the Library’s regular business hours, regardless of whether or not they will be meeting in-person.
Work Environment: If meeting virtually, Job Coaches can work from home or wherever is most comfortable to them, as long as they are in a quiet environment that allows them to focus as well as protect the job seeker’s confidentiality. They must be visible to the job seeker via a webcam and
therefore must have access to appropriate lighting. If meeting in person, Job Coaches must meet inside a Sacramento Public Library branch during regular business hours.
Volunteer Screening Process: Volunteers will be required to participate in an interview for this position. They will also need to submit an online application through our website as well as receive DOJ clearance by means of completing a live scan and submitting a DOJ questionnaire to the Library’s HR department.
Volunteer Training & Supervision: Volunteers will report to the library’s Systemwide Volunteer Coordinator and will go through an orientation process. They will be expected to already know how to perform the basic functions of this position. The Systemwide Volunteer Coordinator can provide further guidance on interview and resume skills and other general resources if need be. Service Hour Reporting: Volunteers must report their hours to the library’s Systemwide Volunteer Coordinator on a monthly basis.
