Where curiosity meets community.

Sacramento Public Library’s volunteer program empowers volunteers to learn new skills, connect with their community, and fulfill personal goals. We view our volunteers as community partners as well as library advocates and value their diverse perspectives while incorporating their knowledge of local needs and interests into the services we offer.

  • Learning New Skills: Volunteers have the opportunity to practice the following skills: both informal and professional social skills, organization, time management, teamwork, leadership, creativity and technological literacy.
  • Connection: Volunteer opportunities combat social isolation in our community. We celebrate relationship building and social emotional learning in the opportunities we offer by encouraging collaboration during volunteer shifts.
  • Personal Growth: Volunteers set their own goals, in partnership with staff and in alignment which branch goals.

We value developing and sustaining an accessible volunteer program, regardless of individuals’ abilities or backgrounds. This means prioritizing the needs and interests of our volunteers and always offering accommodations and practicing flexibility when it is possible to do so. While SPL’s volunteer program provides the library with valued support, it is also a program designed to support our community members’ goals.
