About the role

A rewarding opportunity is available to work as part of our core team to support collaborative recovery planning for people experiencing challenges with drugs and alcohol. You’ll positively contribute to a clients experience at all stages of their recovery journey - from assessment and engagement, right through to sustained recovery.

Location and Time Commitment

• Stoke Community Drug & Alcohol Service, Unit 2, Whittle Court, Town Road, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 2Q
• Flexible hours, Monday to Friday

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

• Supporting Recovery Workers to deliver one-to-one sessions including brief interventions and giving harm reduction advice

• Supporting staff with the preparation, planning & delivery of specific interventions in client sessions

• Supporting the needle exchange provision (training provided)

• Aided by clinical staff, supporting with drug testing procedures to assist our clinical team’s assessments and reviews using specialist equipment

• Accompanying staff who are visiting clients in the community or on home visits, providing reassurance and support to clients who might otherwise not be in a position to attend the service

• Occasionally support group sessions 

• If you have lived experience of using alcohol or substances yourself there will be opportunities to use this to provide  peer support to our clients

What skills will you need?

• A friendly, positive and approachable manner

• Ability to work with people in a non-judgmental and solution-focused way

• Able to work independently and as part of a diverse team

• Compassion and the ability to empathise with the challenges faced by the people using our services and their wider support network

• Able to follow instructions and act on own initiative within set boundaries

• IT literacy (use of computers and mobile phones) may be helpful

• Good command of the English Language, both verbally and in writing

• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in accordance with policies

• Lived experience of drug and/or alcohol journey(s) is not required but people who have lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply

Requirements 

• Please note that we require you to be a minimum of 18 years of age to be considered for this volunteering role

• This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at an Enhanced Level.
