Canteen Positions - Canteen Crew Member
Activity Summary:
Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) is there when disaster strikes. Most often this means providing hydration and food service to first responders and victims at local fires, but it can also mean EDS is on scene at larger disasters, like tornadoes or floods. Whatever the circumstance, EDS relief efforts are supporting communities in times of significant need.
Canteens, or mobile kitchens, are the most well-known of EDS vehicles. Canteens provide cold drinks and hot meals when and where they're needed most. As a Canteen Crew Member, you will serve on a full-service "kitchen on wheels" that is capable of preparing thousands of meals per day.
This position requires some willingness to work on-call. It is best for volunteers to commit to regularly scheduled shift. Shifts are flexible -- they can be once a week, once a month, or one weekend a month -- but upholding your commitment is crucial to your team members and to the first responders EDS serves.
Qualifications:
- 18 years or older
- High energy level and the ability to stand for hours at a time
- Confident and able to work under pressure
- Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
- Reliable, professional, and hard-working
Policies:
Due to the nature of the position, volunteers need to pass a background check and attend training. Once cleared, volunteers need to complete The Salvation Army Safe from Harm training within 90 days of starting. Recommended training includes an online Introduction to The Salvation Army EDS course and a one-day "Disaster Food Service and Canteen Operations" training course. (Additional training is also available and encouraged!)
EDS uniforms (hats and shirts) are provided. Closed toe shoes required. Alcohol, drugs, smoking, and concealed weapons are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site. Volunteers are not to consume alcohol when they are on call.
