Current Volunteer Opportunities
Tech Help
This volunteer opportunity is currently available at:
- University Place - *Please note that these volunteer roles will not begin until October 2026.* - 2 volunteer opportunities will be available, each with shifts on Tuesdays from 11 am to 1 pm.
Interested in helping customers with basic computer skills? Tech Help is a drop-in program that offers one-on-one assistance a variety of basic computer and software skills such as using email, getting started with MS Word & Excel, understanding computer files, and using apps.
Position Description: Tech Help volunteers provide basic one-on-one assistance using Library and personal computers, phones, and tablets.
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
16 or older
Ability to assist library customers in connecting to the public Wi-fi network with laptop computers, phones, and tablets
Familiarity with major web browsers, search engines, and email platforms
Basic knowledge of iOS and Android devices and how to install apps
Basic knowledge Microsoft Word and Excel
Understanding of how digital files are stored on devices and in the cloud
Ability to troubleshoot minor software issues (no hardware support)
Ability to work with minimal guidance from staff
A patient and understanding demeanor
Time commitment: 2 hours a week on a consistent schedule. Schedule will vary depending on the location.
Physical requirements:
Movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers to use computers, phones, and/or tablets
Visual acuity to see computer, phone or tablet screens
Training Provided:
Customer service expectations
Library digital collections and online services, such as eBooks and databases
Benefits for the Volunteer:

Adult Programs

Interested in assisting staff with programs for adults?
Position Description: Under the direction of Library staff leading programs, Adult Program Volunteers may perform the following tasks:
Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other materials for library programs
Greet customers as they arrive, answer basic questions and count attendees
Take photos/videos and encourage participation in surveys
Suggest pre-determined alternate activities and accessibility support items to attendees, as needed
Help facilitate group discussions such as Conversation Cafes
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
18 or older
Basic customer service skills
Open to other ideas and opinions and willing to learn from others
Time commitment: Minimum 1 2-hour shift a month. Schedule varies by location.
Physical requirements: Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
Training Provided:
Customer service expectations
Program set up, goals, and expectations
Facilitating a Conversation Cafe

Youth Programs
This volunteer opportunity is currently available at:
- Lakewood Library - *Please note that this volunteer role will not begin until October 2026, when fall story times begin at Lakewood.* This volunteer role will assist with story times on Tuesdays from 10:00-12:00. This volunteer opportunity will typically be weekly with periodic breaks in the story time schedule.
- Summit Library - Volunteer shifts will be with a monthly children's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program typically held on Tuesday afternoons/evenings.
Interested in assisting staff with programs for youth?
Position Description: Under the direction of Library staff leading programs, Youth Program Volunteers may perform the following tasks:
Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other materials for library programs for youth ages 0-19 and their families
Greet customers as they arrive, answer basic questions and count attendees
Take photos/videos and encourage participation in surveys
Suggest pre-determined alternate activities and accessibility support items to attendees, as needed
Hold up additional copies of books and props during story time or assist with demonstrations during presentations
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
14 or older
Basic customer service skills
Experience working or volunteering with youth preferred
Time commitment: Minimum 1 2-hour shift a month. Schedule varies by location.
Physical requirements: Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
Training Provided:
Customer service expectations
Orientation to program set up, goals, and expectations
Benefits for the volunteer:
Gain skills by observing the facilitation of open-ended exploration and informal educational activities that meet the developmental needs of children and teens
Contribute positively to youth confidence and sense of belonging
Help provide a safe, accessible, and stimulating environment for youth ages 0-18 and their caregivers

Virtual Talk Time
This volunteer opportunity is currently virtual only, and there are no available openings for new volunteers.
Interested in helping newcomers gain confidence in speaking English? Virtual Talk Time is a program for English conversation practices that allows ESL/ELL community members to practice their English language skills and connect with others in an information and safe space. Facilitate conversations cover a wide range of topics. Groups are currently offered on Tuesdays 10:00-11:00am and Thursdays 6:00-7:00pm.
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
18 or older
Fluent or proficient in English (Proficiency in other languages is not required but is helpful)
Basic facilitation skills
Ability to work with minimal guidance from staff
Access to a personal device with reliable internet access
Familiarity with basic Zoom features
A patient and understanding demeanor
Experience working or volunteering with multicultural groups is preferred
Time commitment: 1 hour per week.
Physical requirements: Ability to operate a computer, phone, or tablet to access Zoom.
