Volunteer Programs - 2. Recreation Buddy Program - on hiatus
Recreation Volunteer Buddy Program provides special needs training to qualified level 2 volunteers who are interested in expanding their education portfolio. This training will allow you to provide support to special needs children aged 3- 12 participating in recreation programing at ARC and MRC who may need assistance with clarification of instructions, social interactions, focusing to complete tasks and or problem solving.
Note; your signup here is an expression of interest; you will confirm your participation in this program and chose your specific shift assignment once your training is complete.
Description of Responsibilities:
• Attend a pre-meeting with the client family and Volunteer Coordinator to review client needs.
• Assist program leaders with 1:1 support of a child of diverse abilities to participate in programs.
• Assist with redirection, social support, clarification of instructions, and/or problem solving in Arena, Aquatic, Art, Sport, and Recreation activities with the City of Abbotsford Parks, Recreation and Culture department.
Skills and Qualifications Required:
• Attend an Inclusion training workshop.
• Ability to take direction from staff.
• Ability to work with children.

- Please see the CRC form which you will need to complete and bring to our meeting as mentioned below. I will need to see 2 pieces of ID (1 primary – Passport or birth certificate and 1 secondary – Student ID or Care Card). Once I’ve checked your ID, then I submit the form on your behalf. Please note that this process currently takes the Provincial Government 4-6 weeks to process.

- Please note if you are under the age of 18 years old you will also need this form signed by a parent or guardian.

- Attend an Orientation Meeting. Register for a scheduled Orientation meeting which you will find under your volunteer profile opportunities tab. This meeting will provide you with the ability to meet the volunteer coordinator and submit your documents. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the volunteer role. Program specific/event training will occur at the recreation centre.

Additional Information:
Individuals can record volunteer hours under "Hours Log" in their myvolunteerpage.com account. Staff will approve the hours you’ve logged.
All Volunteers for the Recreation Buddy Program must be Level 3 approved. Level 3 volunteers are those that have successfully completed their Level 2 requirements; an orientation interview, a Criminal Record Check, and two references as well as Level 3 specialized training specific to their program area.
