Community Support - Garden Valley Community Center - Maintenance Director
What are the Volunteer duties or responsibilities?
Perform or arrange for preventative maintenance before small problems become expensive stories for the next Board meeting.
Arrange and oversee contracts for grass mowing, snow removal and grounds maintenance.
Coordinate septic tank pumping/emptying and other septic-related maintenance.
Ensure appropriate people have access when they need it and, ideally, that people who should not have access don’t.
Maintain an up-to-date record of keys, codes, locks, and access arrangements.
Contact, coordinate, and hire qualified contractors as required, including plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, septic contractors, locksmiths, and other tradespeople for both routine maintenance and emergency repairs.
Respond to urgent maintenance situations with calm professionalism—or at minimum, with a functioning phone and the ability to call someone who knows what they’re doing.
Education/Knowledge Required
Basic knowledge of building maintenance and repairs.
The ability to distinguish between “I can fix that” and “We should probably call an electrician.”
Good organizational and communication skills.
Humour and the ability to say, “Well, that’s not supposed to do that,” without panicking.
Benefits to the Volunteer
It will give you the opportunity to continue to utilize some of your handy skills that you have to a community of people who highly depend on it.
Time commitment required
1 to 2 hours per week, availability during the day would be helpful. You would also need to attend monthly meetings from September to May. Occasional on-call maybe needed if an emergency arises.
