Education - Camps and Caterpillar Club - Youth Day Camp Assistant

Activity Instructions

Volunteers will assist for Youth Day Camps at Reiman Gardens. They will serve as an education assistant - helping Reiman Gardens staff and students as needed.

The opportunity doesn't require much, but would be a big help to our education staff! Having another person to assist makes the day easier and more fun for everyone. Feel free to sign up for both shifts each day if you are interested in a full day of Youth Day Camp!

Volunteers may help distribute materials, assist with classroom activities, encourage children, answer their questions, and other needs as assigned by staff.

What to do when you arrive

  • Sign in using your Better Impact app or the kiosk at the front desk.
  • Head to the Classroom in the Mahlstede Building. If the campers aren't there, the teacher will leave a note for you with directions on where to find them.

Any other information for volunteers?

  • Morning Shift: 9 AM - 12 PM
  • Afternoon Shift: 1 PM - 4 PM
  • *Lunch is from 11:30-12:30 PM. Feel free to bring your lunch and eat with the kids, if you wish!
  • Volunteers may be asked to help with classroom supplies such as paint, markers, scissors, hot glue, etc.
  • Youth Day Camps also explore the outdoors and will be on your feet for a lot of the day. Comfortable shoes are important.

Professional Boundaries and Ethics When Working with Children

Please maintain professional boundaries with any children you work with. This includes

  • maintaining confidentiality of children and families' private information,
  • treating all children equitably,
  • reporting suspected abuse or neglect, and
  • fostering an environment that supports children's voices and idea.

We also ask that you refrain any physical contact with kids that is unnecessary, invasive, or could be interpreted as sexual or disciplinary, and please never share your phone or other electronic devices with students. If you're ever unsure, err on the side of caution and ask staff first. Please let me know if you have any questions about these items.
