Education - Education Program Support - Program Assistant: Intro to Indigo Shibori Techniques
Activity Description
Our instructor, Connie Ortberg, is looking for a volunteer to help her with setup and cleanup, and various additional tasks during this all-day indigo dyeing workshop.
This volunteer would be able to participate in the hands-on projects as well, at no charge, in exchange for their help. Please bring a lunch with you for this volunteer opportunity. If you're interested in doing a half-day shift, please email Kim (khope@iastate.edu).
Introduction to Indigo Shibori Technique
In this workshop with artist Connie Ortberg, well explore three different Shibori resistance dyeing techniques; Kumo, Arashi, and Itajme. You will take home three Indigo dyed cotton pieces for your use. The workshop will begin with a brief history of the art of Shibori, followed by a demonstration of the three simple, basic methods of folding, binding, and using twisting methods to create unique patterns on the fabric.
For the class we will use traditional permanent Indigo dyed cotton. Shibori is a truly an amazing art, as every dyed price is unique in its final pattern. No two will ever be the same. You will love the process of folding fabric, dyeing it, and the unfolding to reveal its unique organic results!
