Lead and regular volunteering roles - Head Gardeners
We are seeking two to three volunteer Head Gardeners to support management of the growing spaces at Railway Gardens for people and wildlife. In particular you will help ensure that small quantities of fruit and veg can be harvested for cookery activities.
In this role you will...
- Take the lead on seasonal and ongoing garden tasks, including propagation, potting on, planting out, plant care, harvesting, and soil care.
- Communicate with the other volunteer Head Gardeners and the Green Squirrel team to identify areas for improvement and let us know what seeds, plants equipment are needed.
- Help keep the garden areas beautiful, tidy, and wildlife friendly.
- There will also be optional opportunities to support other volunteers or families, one to one or in very small groups, to work on these tasks alongside you.
This role would suit you if...
- You can spare 2 - 4 hours each week, ideally during working hours Tuesday - Friday/ Saturday mornings but we can be flexible about this.
- You are comfortable doing basic regular tasks such as potting on seedlings, planting out, feeding plants or weeding;
- You are happy to work in-line with our ethos of nature-positive gardening (no weedkillers or pesticides, minimal plastic, and 'untidy' spaces for wildlife);
- You are happy to follow our health and safety guidance to keep yourself and other Garden users safe;
- You like taking ownership of tasks and are happy taking a look at what needs to be done and prioritising;
- You'd like to practice your gardening skills or gain hands-on experience in community growing;
- You want to make a meaningful difference in the community, helping more people to grow veg and connect with nature.
How Green Squirrel will support you in this role?
- A full induction and opportunities to get training and experience in transferable skills such as safeguarding, health and safety, or working with others.
- Support from the team to help plan tasks and make sure all equipment and resources are available.
- Helping you evidence your volunteering to support your career, and providing a reference once you've completed an agreed number of hours with us.
- A Railway Gardens t-shirt and hoodie!
- Invites to volunteer social events
