As stewards for the organization, Directors provide strategic direction to staff, regularly review the organization’s financial statements, and approve the annual budget. In addition, Directors are a key part of the public face of the organization and occasionally represent Kerby Centre at events. Committees looking for members: Fund Development, Communications & Marketing; Finance and Audit;. Committee meetings are held as required normally 4-6 per year.

Catering Events

Unison at Kerby Centre is a not-for-profit organization. We have various ways of bringing in money to fund our programs and services. One of these is by renting out our spaces to community groups. Many groups request catering with their rentals because they are having a party, a concert, a wedding or a reunion. Kerby Centre provides the food and the volunteers for these events.

Volunteers will do well if they like working with people, are clear communicators, are comfortable on their feet and with lifting items such as chairs.

Shifts will usually be composed of a mixture of the following:

Set up - pipe and drape, tables, chairs, linens, cutlery, glassware, buffet, and decorations

Food running - this is where a volunteer will bring food from the cafe to the event location - either the gym, the lounge or the lecture room. Food will either be carried on trays or on carts. This volunteer may be asked to make multiple trips to restock if the serving area is in need.

Serving - this will be from a buffet, food stations or as plated service. Volunteers may also be asked to fill water glasses, serve from a coffee station or sometimes serve from the bar.

Clearing - of dinner plates to make way for dessert plates, then dessert plates and glassware, then linens.

Takedown - folding up and putting away tables, stacking chairs, taking down pipe and drape.

Shifts vary in length per event. Some catering events are in the evening or on the weekend.
