Nature Care Groups

The Nature Care Group program is Tweed Shire Council's community bushcare initiative, where local volunteers work together to protect and improve Council managed natural areas and bushland.

The work that Nature Care Groups do supports the Tweed community and Council's goal to 'Take action as caretakers for our internationally significant environment to pass on to our next generation'.

There are established groups across most towns and villages in the valley and along the coast. They work closely with Council to restore natural ecosystems and do follow up maintenance in areas where Council has invested in professional rehabilitation and restoration.

Nature Care Groups operate in partnership with Council, ensuring all activities are guided and approved by Council experts to ensure the best outcomes. Whether you're tackling weeds, planting natives or picking up litter, you'll be working as part of a coordinated effort, ensuring that every action supports the broader goals for our community to protect and improve the natural environment.

No matter your skill level or experience, joining a Nature Care Group is a fantastic way to meet new people, connect with nature, develop new skills and contribute to a healthier Tweed.

Nature Care Group volunteer roles

Nature Care Group volunteer

The Nature Care Group program is Tweed Shire Council's community bushcare  volunteer program.

As a volunteer with Nature Care, you will work under the direction of a volunteer group coordinator and Council's volunteer supervisor, and actively carry out on-ground works that helps protect and enhance the Tweed's natural habitats and biodiversity.

Some of the key activities include:

  • remove weeds and other plants that are harmful to our natural areas
  • propagate native plants in care group nurseries
  • plant appropriate local native trees, shrubs and grasses
  • remove rubbish
  • join social get-togethers, working bees, training days and sharing information.

Nature Care Group coordinator

Each Nature Care Group requires a designated coordinator to continue to operate within the program.

The main role of the group coordinator is to plan activities, coordinate volunteers and deliver the objectives of the Nature Care Program at an approved site, in close consultation with Tweed Shire Council.

A Nature Care Group cannot operate within the program without a designated group coordinator.

Some of the main responsibilities are:

  • act as the principal contact between the volunteer group and Council’s Nature Care program
  • prepare a 5-year plan for the bushcare site, using the Nature Care Plan template, with assistance from the Tweed Shire Council Nature Care Group supervisor
  • meet with the Nature Care Group supervisor at least once a year to undertake annual work planning and site risk assessment
  • coordinate volunteer workdays on the approved site and ensure work is undertaken in accordance with the approved project work plan
  • inform all volunteers of site risks and safety requirements and provide initial safety training to new group members
  • ensure volunteer work on site is undertaken in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements
  • attend training and/or maintain a ‘Provide First Aid’ qualification, including annual CPR refreshers, or ensure another ‘regular’ volunteer maintains this qualification
  • report all injuries incurred by group members whilst working on site to the volunteer supervisor by the end of the next working day.

About Nature Care Groups

Why volunteer with a Nature Care Group?

Join us in protecting and improving the natural environments of the Tweed by volunteering with Council's Nature Care Group program. It is a great way to:

  • Help take care of our beautiful bushland and coastal areas.
  • Meet new people, build friendships, and enjoy the feeling of working together for a good cause.
  • Learn about nature while picking up skills such as, identifying plants, managing weeds and caring for native bushland.
  • Get involved in citizen science for example, helping keep Bitou bush under control on the Tweed Coast to stop it spreading into Queensland.

What do Nature Care Group volunteers do?

  • Remove harmful weeds that damage our natural environment.
  • Where needed, plant local native trees, shrubs and grasses to help our bushland regenerate.
  • Join fun social events, working bees, training sessions and share knowledge with others.

How does your time make a difference?

  • Our volunteers do amazing work! Together, they put in over 13,000 hours a year. That's the same as having 8 extra full-time staff!
  • Nature Care Group volunteers help raise awareness about protecting the environment and show others how they can help too.
  • By volunteering, you are helping build a stronger community that cares for nature.
  • You'll feel great knowing you are making a real difference, and you'll connect with others who share your passion.

Join us today and be a part of a supportive and active volunteer program that is making a big impact!
