Resident Engagement Opportunities - Walking Companion
Walking Companion
Walking Companions spend one-to-one time with Salem Home residents going for short walks indoors or outdoors. These visits provide fresh air, gentle movement, and meaningful conversation while helping residents stay active and socially connected.
Volunteers may walk beside residents who are walking independently or assist by pushing a wheelchair, depending on the resident’s needs.
What Volunteers Do

Walk with one resident at a time around the building or outdoors (weather permitting)

Offer friendly conversation and companionship during the walk

Inform staff when taking a resident out of the unit or outside

Ensure the resident is comfortable and dressed appropriately for the weather

Follow wheelchair safety guidelines if pushing a wheelchair

Report any concerns about the resident to staff

Record volunteer hours in the volunteer record book
Location
Salem Home hallways, courtyards, and outdoor walking areas.
Time Commitment

About 1 hour per visit

Flexible scheduling arranged with the Director of Community Engagement

6 month commitment preferred
Requirements

Age 15 and older
-
Patient, dependable, and observant
-
Comfortable walking with older adults or pushing a wheelchair

Willing to follow Salem Home policies and safety guidelines
Training and Support
Orientation and wheelchair safety guidance are provided by the Director of Community Engagement and Salem Home staff.
