Garden Care Volunteer support Salem Home by helping care for outdoor spaces that bring beauty, calm, and seasonal joy to residents, families, and staff. Volunteers assist with simple gardening tasks such as watering, weeding, and maintaining flower beds and planters.
While this role is primarily independent, volunteers may also interact with residents enjoying the outdoor spaces, contributing to a welcoming and home-like environment.
This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy being outdoors and want to make a quiet but meaningful impact.
What Volunteers Do
- Water flowers, plants, and outdoor planters
- Weed and deadhead flower beds to support healthy growth
- Help keep outdoor spaces tidy and well-maintained
- Report any concerns or damage to staff
- Interact respectfully with residents when appropriate
- Follow safety and infection control guidelines
- Record volunteer hours in the volunteer record book
Location
Outdoor garden areas, planters, and pathways around Salem Home.
Time Commitment
- Typically 30–60 minutes per visit
- Flexible scheduling (often evenings or weekends)
- Ongoing or seasonal participation
Requirements
- Age 12 and older (under 15 with supervision)
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather
- Willingness to learn basic gardening tasks
- Independent, dependable, and observant
- Willing to follow Salem Home policies
Training and Support
Orientation and guidance provided by the Director of Community Engagement and staff.
