Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Program Opportunities - TR Outing Volunteer

TR Outing Volunteers support residents during planned outings into the community. Volunteers accompany residents on trips such as shopping, picnics, events, or scenic drives, helping create safe, enjoyable, and meaningful experiences.

Volunteers work alongside Therapeutic Recreation staff and may assist either as a driver (Must be a registered Handi-Van Driver Volunteer) or as a companion during the outing.

This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy being active, social, and part of shared experiences.

What Volunteers Do

  • Assist with loading and unloading residents (no lifting or transferring)
  • Accompany residents during outings and provide companionship
  • Walk alongside residents or assist with wheelchairs
  • Encourage participation and enjoyment during the outing
  • Follow direction from Therapeutic Recreation staff
  • Support a safe and positive environment
  • Notify staff of any concerns
  • Record volunteer hours in the volunteer record book

Location

Outings take place in the community and begin and end at Salem Home.

Time Commitment

  • Typically 1–4 hours per outing
  • Scheduled in advance
  • May include weekdays, evenings, or weekends
  • 6 month commitment preferred

Requirements

  • Age 15 and older
  • Friendly, patient, and adaptable
  • Comfortable walking or being active during outings
  • Able to follow staff direction and safety guidelines
  • Comfortable interacting with older adults, including those with dementia

Training and Support

  • Orientation provided by the Director of Community Engagement
  • On-site guidance provided by Therapeutic Recreation staff during outings
