Program Description
CVITP participating organizations host free tax clinics where volunteers' complete income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals to ensure they receive, or continue to receive, the benefits and credits they are entitled to.
The WC is a participating organization of the CVITP, where year-round we host free tax clinics to support community members in tax completion, information and access to potential benefits/credits they might be eligible for. Our program is supported by dedicated tax volunteers who prepare and complete taxes, and benefit navigator volunteers who support community members gain access to eligible benefits and credits.
Job Duties
- As a volunteer tax preparer, you will complete taxes for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.
- Helping women to complete their taxes at the Women’s Centre and sharing other community resources that women might qualify for.
- Providing women with support through active listening and talking to women in general to facilitate social connections; and to maintain an inclusive and welcoming space for all women.
Needed Skills & Requirements
- Two years’ professional experience filing taxes, Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) registration, and EFile Screening.
- Have a police check that has been completed within the last 3 years.
- Ability to work with women & gender-diverse members in a non-judgmental manner.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
- Participation in an initial orientation and ongoing training sessions.
- An interest in women’s issues and in helping women.
- Good listening and communication skills.
- A willingness to work within the philosophy of the Women’s Centre.
Time Commitment
This position requires a minimum time commitment of 3hrs/week from March to May. If you are available longer than 3hrs/week, please let us know. Taxes are filed electronically, and volunteers are expected to be able to help 6 women during the 3 hours shift.
- Our tax season begins in March and ends in May, where we then will transition to drop-in tax clinics.
- Drop-in tax clinics year-round.
