Cooking & Nutrition Class Assistant
Program Overview
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable Cooking and Nutrition Class Assistants to support our hands-on cooking classes for newcomers.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support newcomers while sharing your love for cooking and gaining valuable experience.
Each session runs once a week for eight weeks and focuses on:
- Healthy, low-cost “Canadian-style” meals
- Food safety practices
- Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide
- How to read and understand nutrition labels on packaged foods
- Grocery shopping on a budget (includes one class held at the grocery store)
Duties and Responsibilities
Preparation
- Review the weekly class agenda (sent via email) to understand the schedule, topics, and recipes.
In-Class Assistance
- Help with recipe preparation
- Support delivery of class content
- Assist with clean-up between topics and recipes
Clean-up
- Work with clients and volunteers to:
- Wash, sanitize, dry, and store dishes
- Store leftover perishable foods safely
- Ensure food is equally portioned for clients to take home
- Clean countertops and kitchen surfaces
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Interest and familiarity with Canadian-style cooking, including vegetarian options; experience with ethnic foods is beneficial
- Ability to lead small groups
- Patient, warm, open-minded, and enthusiastic personality required
- Basic healthy eating knowledge
Location
- Classes take place at the Immigrant Centre
Time Commitment Required
- Approximately three hours weekly, including set-up and clean-up
- Arrival 15 minutes before class start time is required
