English Conversation Group Facilitator

Position Overview

We are looking for English Conversation Group Facilitators to support newcomers by leading engaging and supportive conversation classes.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to help adult learners improve their English speaking skills in a welcoming environment, either online or in person.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate an English conversation group class for newcomers.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Must be fluent in English.

  • For online classes – experience using Zoom.

  • Adult EAL/ESL teaching experience.

  • EAL Teacher Certification (e.g., Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language – CTESL) preferred.

  • Other teaching experience will be considered.

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds.

  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Must have strong time management and organization skills.

  • Patience.

Location

  • Online classes take place via Zoom.

  • In-person classes take place at the Immigrant Centre.

Time Commitment Required

  • 2 hours weekly for three months.

  • Classes are scheduled Mondays to Thursdays (morning, afternoon, and evening), and Fridays and Saturdays (morning and afternoon).

  • Must be available consistently on the same day and time each week.

Cooking & Nutrition Class Assistant

Program Overview

We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable Cooking and Nutrition Class Assistants to support our hands-on cooking classes for newcomers. 

This is a wonderful opportunity to support newcomers while sharing your love for cooking and gaining valuable experience.

Each session runs once a week for eight weeks and focuses on:

  • Healthy, low-cost “Canadian-style” meals
  • Food safety practices
  • Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide
  • How to read and understand nutrition labels on packaged foods
  • Grocery shopping on a budget (includes one class held at the grocery store)

Duties and Responsibilities

Preparation

  • Review the weekly class agenda (sent via email) to understand the schedule, topics, and recipes.

In-Class Assistance

  • Help with recipe preparation
  • Support delivery of class content
  • Assist with clean-up between topics and recipes

Clean-up

  • Work with clients and volunteers to:
  • Wash, sanitize, dry, and store dishes
  • Store leftover perishable foods safely
  • Ensure food is equally portioned for clients to take home
  • Clean countertops and kitchen surfaces

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Interest and familiarity with Canadian-style cooking, including vegetarian options; experience with ethnic foods is beneficial
  • Ability to lead small groups
  • Patient, warm, open-minded, and enthusiastic personality required
  • Basic healthy eating knowledge

Location

  • Classes take place at the Immigrant Centre 

Time Commitment Required

  • Approximately three hours weekly, including set-up and clean-up
  • Arrival 15 minutes before class start time is required

English Language Partner

Position Overview

We are seeking friendly and dependable English Language Partners to support newcomers by providing informal conversation practice and sharing helpful information about life in Winnipeg and Canada.

This volunteer role is a great opportunity to help newcomers improve their English skills in a welcoming environment—either online or in person.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet online or in person with your Language Partner for informal conversation sessions.

  • Assist with basic grammar, vocabulary building, and pronunciation.

  • Provide encouragement and support to help build confidence.

  • Share general information about Winnipeg, including community events, activities, schools, and transportation.

  • Offer insights about Canadian life, culture, and customs.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Have resided in Canada (preferably Winnipeg) for at least three years.

  • Knowledgeable about Winnipeg and its communities.

  • Fluent in English with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 8 or equivalent.

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong time management and organization skills.

  • Patience and understanding.

  • For online sessions, experience using Zoom is required.

Location

  • Online sessions take place via Zoom.

  • In-person meetings occur at the Immigrant Centre or off-site at public locations such as libraries or coffee shops. Volunteers who wish to meet off-site must provide a Police Record Check. 

Time Commitment Required

  • Approximately 1.5 hours per week.

  • Minimum commitment of three months.

  • One meeting per week is required.

  • Shifts are available on weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays.

Translator

Position Overview

We are seeking Translators fluent in English and at least one other language to verify the accuracy of translated documents.

This flexible volunteer-from-home role involves reviewing documents to ensure accurate translations and suits detail-oriented individuals with fluent language skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Verify the accuracy of translated documents, including diplomas, certificates, legal documents, medical documents, and letters.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Fluency in English and at least one other language.

  • Excellent reading, writing, and oral communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent time management and organization skills.

  • Previous document translation experience is an asset.

Time Commitment Required

  • Flexible schedule; volunteer-from-home.
