Summary
The Group Fitness Instructor Volunteer will lead fun and safe classes for YMCA members on behalf of the YMCA Calgary. All instructors are responsible for keeping up to date with certifications and continuing education credits. Instructors are expected to bring their knowledge and positive attitude to each class they teach. Classes include: Group Strength, Yoga, Zumba®, Group Cardio, Gentle Fitness, Cycle, and Aquatic Fitness.
Time Commitment
This position requires a one-year commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) regular class per week.
Duties and Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures
- Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers
- Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift
Program Support
- Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
- Manage risks associated with participation in programs
- Provide an impactful experience for members and non-members participating in fitness classes
- Arrive 20 minutes prior to class start to set up equipment
- Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers
- Provide excellent service for participants by being available before and after classes to answer questions and respond to feedback
Skills
At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:
- Previous experience teaching group fitness classes
- Ability to educate participants on the fundamentals of fitness and exercise by leading safe and progressive classes including warm-up and cool-down
- Ability to accommodate participants of varying ages and abilities by providing modifications for exercises included in program plans

Qualifications
- Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
- Three references (two professional)
- Able to attend and complete required trainings
- Valid YMCA or AFLCA Group Fitness certification
- Current CPR C certification (CPR recertified within the last 12 months)
